CHAPTERTWENTY-THREE

“GIVE MY FATHER the details,” Dom said to Tony. “We’re out.”

As the doors to the private elevator opened, Dom shoved Luca inside, and for once, he didn’t protest. Smart, given Dom’s frame of mind at that moment. He couldn’t believe the little fucker had tried to escape—or, more importantly, that he’d almost succeeded.

With a tight hand on his slippery prize, Dom punched the button for the penthouse and waited for the doors to shut. He was practically vibrating with his rage and fury, his irritation that this kid had gotten one up on him.

“How dare you,” he snarled as the door closed. “Haven’t I made it abundantly clear what would happen to you if you ever tried to run?”

“Oh, you made it crystal clear,” Luca spat. “If I run, I die. If I stay, I die. If I blink twice or breathe a little fucking loud, I die. So why the hell did you ever think I’d stay? Becauseyoutold me to?”

For the second time tonight, Dom was caught off guard. Where was the scared, obedient kid he’d escorted downstairs tonight? The Luca who understood that if he stepped out of line he’d end up back in the basement with Joe, or worse yet, at the bottom of the Hudson?

Dom thought Luca was smarter than that, and that he’d been clear. It appeared he’d been wrong on both counts.

The elevator dinged at their level, and, not trusting himself to speak, Dom dragged Luca out into the hall where Joe stood. When Luca spotted the big guy, some of that bravado from the elevator left him.

“You need anything, Dom?”

Dom said nothing, just aimed a stony stare in Joe’s direction, and that seemed answer enough, because the big guy nodded and went back to staring at the wall.

“Get moving,” Dom said by Luca’s ear, and when he didn’t budge, Dom added, “Unless you want to stay out here with Joe?”

Luca walked toward the door of the penthouse like one would toward his execution, and with the stunt he’d pulled tonight, he might be if Dom’s father didn’t have other plans.

When they reached the suite, Dom all but threw Luca inside, and the momentum must caught him off guard, because he stumbled on the rug and fell. Dom marched in behind him and hit the button on his phone to engage the locks.

Luca glared over his shoulder. “So now what? You going to beat me bloody?”

“That’s the least of what I want to do to you right now.”

Luca let out a humorless laugh as he got to his feet. “Great. Maybe we can get dueling pistols to make it fair. Or lightsabers. Swords? What’s the weapon of choice tonight, huh?”

“You think being a mouthy shit is going to help you?”

“I havenothing. To. Lose,” Luca shouted, throwing his hands up.

Dom went still, surprised that after everything that had just happened, Luca still had some fire left in him.

“You’re wrong,” Dom said. “You have everything to lose. You think this is a fucking joke?”

“No, I think this is a nightmare. What do you expect me to do?”

“I expect you to do what I tell you to fucking do. If they’d succeeded, if they’d taken you, do you have any idea what you’d be walking into?”

Luca scoffed. “So, what, yousavedme?”

“Yes. I did.”

“Oh my God.” Luca ran his hands over his face. “You’re insane.”

“No, insanity is thinking you could survive as a fucking Fiore. Trust me, I’m doing you a favor.”

“Trust you?Trustyou? I hate you.”

Dom grabbed hold of Luca’s arm and hauled him in close. “Finally. The feeling’s mutual.”

Luca’s breath came out in hot, quick pants across Dom’s lips, stirring a reaction inside him he didn’t expect. His cock jerked, then his body took over any rational thought.
