“Dragan isn’t home yet,” she said as brightly as she could manage. “So, I am focusing on the problem of my dead man to keep me busy. Was he married? Did he have children?”

“No. He never married. But he gave every indication of enjoying his life.”

“Wine, women, and song?”

“I would say so.”

She smiled a little tremulously. “Then he really was a merry gentleman.”

This seemed to baffle the vicar, but Griz was suddenly distracted by a small child across the table who had crammed so much food in her mouth that she seemed likely to choke. She charged to the rescue.

When the food was all gone, everyone gathered around the decorated tree. Griz and other helpers lit the candles while the vicar told the story of Jesus’s birth. As the gifts beneath the tree were distributed to the awed children, it struck Griz that Sebastian Cartaret had largely paid for them.

Oh yes, she owed him at least the courtesy of finding out the truth about his death.
