Did Trey feel the same or was he stringing her along for only a Christmas tryst?

In a whirlwind, they donned their outerwear and then she was tucked beneath the lap blanket in his open carriage. Clouds scudded across the navy skies, and the light from the waning half-moon lent the landscape a faint silvery frost. Trey didn’t speak much and neither did he attempt to kiss her as he’d hinted.

Halfway home, surrounded by empty fields and rolling grasslands, their progress was halted by a large flock of sheep.

“Well, damn.”

Noelle couldn’t help the laughter that bubbled up from her chest. “If that’s not a sign, I don’t know what is.” When Trey joined in on the mirth, she lost another piece of her heart to him.

He turned toward her with a wide grin. “It seems we’ll be delayed.”

“At least the night is fair.”

“Indeed, and this suits my purposes well.” He hopped down from the carriage. When Noelle frowned as confusion took hold, he offered her his hand. “Since the sheep aren’t of a mind for moving and in fact some have laid down, what say you to taking advantage of the meadow?”

“Oh?” What were his intentions? She could guess, and her racing pulse held that hope, but what if she were wrong?

His eyes glittered in the low light. “We can usher in Christmas much like the frightened shepherds talked about in the Good Book.”

“Falling prostrate on the ground and praying to be spared?” Yet need went down her spine as renewed awareness spiked over her skin.

He snorted. “Rather, I wish to lay you down and possibly share the greatest intimacy with you,” he responded in a thrilling whisper as he tugged her away from the carriage.

At the last second, Noelle grabbed the fur-lined blanket. “That sounds lovely.” If there was a certain breathlessness in her voice, she ignored it, for on this night, her life would change.

Finally, after all this time, she’d tread a new path.
