He laughed and held her shoulders when she tried to climb down from the desk. “Allow me to fix your dress for you.” She wanted to refuse, but she was not ready to part with his touch and closeness. She sighed and nodded.

Elizabeth brushed his hair away from his face as he fastened her buttons. “Why do you wear it long?”

He smiled. “It suits me.”

She nudged his chest and laughed. “You are shameless.”

“I know.” He pulled her cloak onto her shoulders. “I have worn it long since I was fifteen. I dislike the fashionable cuts.”

“I suppose that is fair,” she said. “Convention is confining. I detest it.”

He tilted his head and gazed at her for a moment, causing a flush to rise to her cheeks. “I will take you back to Winston House.”

“No, I have to see the fight,” she dissented.

“Eliza—”

“You cannot tell me what to do.”

He ran his hands through his hair and looked intensely at her. “Are you putting yourself in the path of scandal, so I cannot marry your sister?”

“Perhaps I should consider it if it will stop you,” she fired back. “Any man who would touch me without any consideration for Irene should not marry her.”

“You speak of consideration, yet you begged me to please you.”

“I did not beg you.” she returned through clenched teeth, wishing he was not standing over her and imprisoning her with his body.

“Your body did, and it never lies.”

He was right, and she hated herself for wanting him. “We are both wrong, and Irene deserves better.”

“Indeed, she does, but I am still determined to marry her.”

“You are despicable.”

He winced and placed a hand on his chest. “You wound me, Elizabeth.”

She chuckled despite herself. “You wounded yourself when you decided to fight me.”

“Unfortunately, that is true.”

She started to step down from the desk even though her foot ached, but he held her shoulders and stopped her.

“You have to let me go,” she protested.

“Our discussion is not finished.”

“We have nothing more to discuss,” she disagreed, still attempting to resist him and deny the force between them.

“Yes, we do.” He helped her down from the desk, but his hands moved to her bottom, and he pressed her against his stiff manhood. “You do this to me, and neither of us will have any peace until we find satisfaction.”

Reluctantly, she placed her hands on his chest and pushed. “Rhys, you just said that you are determined to marry my sister.”

“And you are determined to stop me,” he countered. “You cannot fight what is between us.”

“I can,” she said with confidence that she did not feel. She had to find a way to stop this, and that started with her leaving this room. Elizabeth turned quickly and unlocked the door then she ran out, ignoring the pain in her foot.
