“Oh, leave him,” the Dowager urged. “He might be hungry.”

“He ate before dinner, My Lady,” Elizabeth informed her. “He will only ruin Lord Guildford’s meal now.” Brutus barked as if he agreed with her. She smiled down at him as she scooped him up. He barked happily again. Instead of handing him to one of the footmen in the room as Rhys thought she would, she walked out of the dining room with him.

“Does Lady Elizabeth wish for us to pause our meal until she returns?” his grandmother asked, and Lady Winston visibly winced.

“She will not be long, My Lady,” Lady Irene answered, and Rhys appreciated her for defending her sister. His grandmother seemed satisfied by that answer and continued eating her soup while Rhys’ was replaced. A moment later, Elizabeth returned.

“My apologies for that,” she said, taking her seat. “Brutus can be pleasantly unpredictable.” Rhys smiled because he suspected she had found pleasure in what Brutus had done.

Mayton laughed then. “I am impressed with Brutus’ audacity. My cousin takes his meals very seriously.”

“I will have you know that I was amused by his actions.” Rhys raised his glass to his lips.

“That would be a first then.” Mayton grinned before leaning close to Elizabeth and saying something in a low tone. She laughed, and Rhys was suddenly curious about what had made her laugh. Still, he forced his attention back to Lady Irene and told her a bit about the castle as they ate.

After dinner, Rhys left the party to meet with his steward. Later, he sought his grandmother to speak to her. As he was walking past one of the drawing rooms, he saw Elizabeth in the room walking out onto the terrace. Rhys immediately walked into the room to join her.
