They were interrupted by the sound of spitting gravel, the vroom of a car and pulsating dance music as a red Audi TT swept into the customer car park. It came to an abrupt halt. The door swung open and out climbed a suited and stilettoed Jaz.

‘Yoo-hoo.’ Jaz waved, fingers waggling.

Holly glanced at Mitch who had walked to nearby bushes and was returning with her cap in his hand. He passed it to her. ‘You’ve obviously got company. I’ll come by tomorrow, without Trixy.’

The dog added a timely yap.

Holly opened her mouth to speak but he turned abruptly and walked off with his pet wriggling underneath his arm.

Jaz, half way up the path, stopped and gazed over her sunglasses as Mitch passed her. Tottering up to Holly, she mock wiped her brow. ‘I would, I so would,’ she said, nodding her head.

‘No you wouldn’t. That’s Sidney Booth’s nephew.’

Jaz’s mouth opened wide and she squealed. ‘No way. Not Mitchell your childhood crush?’

Holly saw Mitch turn his head. Their eyes met briefly and he grinned.

Holly crossed her arms. ‘Thanks for that.’

‘Calm down, he never heard.’

Holly watched Mitch taking long strides in the distance. ‘He so did.’

‘Flippin’ heck, love, he’s turned out bloody gorgeous.’

‘Down, girl. He’s married.’

‘How do you know? Been checking him out already?’

‘No. He said his wife chose the dog.’ Holly replaced her cap firmly on her head. ‘Anyway, he’s not my type.’

Jaz laughed and pushed her sunglasses on top of her head, opening her warm-brown eyes wide. ‘Firstly, that man is every woman’s type and secondly, he could be divorced. Maybe he got custody of the mutt?’

Holly shook her head. ‘You’ve got it wrong.’

Jaz smoothed her dark, choppy bob as the wind took it. ‘Well, a girl can dream, can’t she? I’ll defo be asking around if you’re not going for it.’

‘Of course I’m not going for it. I’ve got Tom.’ She lifted her chin. ‘Even if I was remotely interested, which I’m not, my parents always told me not to get involved with that family. They spell trouble.’

Jaz raised her eyebrows. ‘Yeah, yeah. The whole village knows that Lovelands and Booths don’t mix.’ Jaz nodded in Mitch’s direction. ‘But maybe you and yummy Mitchell will be the ones to end the feud.’

‘I’m married and I’m not interested in being his friend.’

‘What are you like?’ Jaz looked at Holly’s muddy clothes. ‘You need to get out of the dirt, hun – get in touch with your inner prom queen.’

Holly picked up her spade. ‘I never was prom queen.’

‘Still – the way I remember it – you were the one the boys wanted to snog.’

‘When?’

‘At the school disco.’

Holly laughed. ‘I don’t dance anymore. I’m thirty and that’s practically middle-aged.’

‘You’re joking, right? Thirty's prime time.’ Jaz flicked her hair.

‘For you maybe,’ Holly said, smiling with one hand on her hip.
