Holly wondered which college. The one locally? Or in London?

‘I’ve changed my appearance, I guess,’ he said smiling. He wore a tight white T-shirt under an open blue shirt teamed with a pair of Levi’s. He was very well presented and appeared to know it.

Holly peered into his hazel eyes which had a black fleck on the left. ‘Ethan, oh my goodness! I’d never have recognised you.’ They’d studied at sixth form college together.

‘I’ve lost a lot of weight. And the spots – all cleared up.’ He laughed. ‘You however haven’t changed a bit. Although your mate seems less scary.’ He nodded over to Jaz who was laughing loudly in between the two men.

Holly smiled watching Jaz. ‘Yes, she ditched the gothic look years ago.’

‘So tell me, what’s the prettiest girl at college doing now then?’

Holly nodded towards Jaz. ‘She sells flash cars.’

‘Not Jaz, I meant you.’ Ethan smiled showing his dazzling teeth. ‘I thought you’d gone to London.’

‘I came back a couple of years ago. It’s a long story and I’ve already been talking about me, me, and me, to those guys over there.’ Holly nodded at the table to Jaz and her friends. ‘Tell me what you’ve been up to.’

‘I went to Lancaster Uni, studied architecture, got into the gym and the weight fell off. I’ve been back in Somerset for three years now. I built my own house over at Shepton Mallet. I’ve tried to fuse nature with art. You’ll have to come over and see it sometime.’ He reached into his back pocket and handed Holly his business card. ‘You’d better get back to your date.’

Holly shook her head and sighed. ‘He’s not my date. I’m actually tired. As I said, it’s a long story but I’m going to get off now.’

She glanced down at his card which said,Moss Architecture. ‘It’d be great to catch up.’I’ll probably be needing his services, she thought, as she leant forward and gave him a kiss on the cheek. ‘Great to see you again.’

Ethan nodded. ‘Ditto.’

Holly returned to Jaz. ‘I think I’d like to go back to yours now. I feel so rough.’

‘No worries, hun. You do look proper peaky.’

‘Oh, no, so soon?’ one of Jaz’s colleagues said.

Jaz smiled. ‘Sorry, Sean, but we only popped out for a quickie.’

‘Wey hey,’ he said.

Jaz shook her head. ‘Don’t get too drunk – you’ll never have a chance of keeping the showroom in the top rankings if you have a hangover tomorrow.’

Once outside,Jaz linked arms with Holly. ‘Who was the guy at the bar then? Don’t think I didn’t notice you chatting him up and giving him a sneaky kiss.’

‘I wasn’t chatting him up.’ Holly laughed. ‘It was Ethan from college.’

‘Not flabby, spotty Ethan?’

‘Don’t be unkind. But yes.’

‘No way. What a change. So you got his number then?’

‘I don’t want to start another relationship.’

‘So that means you did get his number?’

‘Yes. He’s an architect. I’m going to need his services.’

‘Yeah right, you minx.’

Holly giggled, they both knew Holly was no minx and that she had never dated around. As they neared Jaz’s apartment, Holly wished she could tap into some of her usual strength. Tom was gone, Jaz would be travelling the country. It would be up to her and her alone to sort out her destroyed world.
