Mitch laughed. ‘I’m not likely to forget my first kiss.’

Holly grinned, feeling transported back fifteen years. It was his first kiss too?she thought. And of course she remembered it. They’d agreed to meet at seven in the evening after dinner when his Uncle Sid would be with the cows. And her parents would be settling down to watch a soap. It was the last day of Mitch’s holiday, the last time she had seen him in Eversley until recently. The sweetness came back to her of that warm night. She breathed in deeply.

‘I knew you remembered.’ Mitch smiled.

‘So why did you stop visiting?’ Moving her hair from her face, she could feel her heartbeat quicken.

‘I started college and worked in my holidays. Grew up, I suppose. Lazy summers in Somerset were gone. I’ve been over to visit Sid as an adult, but I never saw you here.’

‘I moved to London. I only came back two years ago when Mum and Dad died.’

Trixy jumped up at Holly and she held her away from her. ‘Whoa don’t get me dirty I’m off out soon.’ Holly saw a flicker of something in Mitch’s eyes. Did his expression change? Was it disappointment? She could not tell. As if on cue there was a rap at the door. Holly stood up, handing Trixy to Mitch so she could open it.

‘Wow, you look gorgeous – as ever,’ Ethan said, grinning up at her.

Holly heard Mitch behind her, clipping Trixy’s lead on. ‘I’ll be off then,’ he said

Holly stepped to one side as he passed. ‘Thanks for popping over.’

Ethan’s eyes widened as he eyed Mitch. ‘Alright?’ he said.

Mitch nodded at him and put his boots on as Trixy jumped about. She sniffed at Ethan’s feet and growled. Mitch nodded at Holly and walked away with Trixy pulling on the lead, attempting to return to Holly.

‘Who’s my competition?’ Ethan asked Holly from the bottom step.

Holly gave a short, nervous laugh. ‘He’s my neighbour. He popped over to ask me to babysit his dog.’

‘Oh really?’

‘There’s nothing going on, I can assure you.’ Holly’s voice reached a higher pitch than usual and it echoed in her head as if she was trying to convince herself, rather than Ethan. Deep down she knew Mitch was more than her type but he was a Booth and she knew that spelled trouble – it always had done.Anyway,it must be lust, she told herself. Not the gentle love she had felt for previous boyfriends or the carefree love she had originally felt with Tom. No, this was something quite animal – an urge. Not something she needed in her life.
