Chapter 10

Holly watched Mitch on the other side of the market square. She felt Ethan’s arm on the small of her back, and resisted the urge to shrug him off as he guided her to the pub.

Once inside they sat at a table by a picture-lined wall and Holly checked out the menu. She had been relieved when Ethan pulled into a parking spot in the market place. The idea of going for a leisurely country drive on a sunny spring day had appealed to her. However, the reality had been a journey full of winding country roads which Ethan had taken at speed, and her stomach was still churning from being lurched from here to there. She ordered a beef pie and chips. Jaz had told her the pies were amazing. Ethan ordered a superfood salad.

‘I’m keeping down my meat intake and have cut out sugar,’ Ethan said as he sipped his sparkling water.

‘You’ve lost enough weight, Ethan.’

‘It’s not for weight loss, it’s for health. I start every day with a green drink with added spirulina.’

Holly smiled, as she sipping her wine.

‘Have you tried it?’

‘No. What is it?’

‘It’s a supplement, high in valuable nutrients.’

‘I just eat my greens. I’ve never bothered with extra vitamins.’

‘Sugar can cause cancers and strokes. You know if you swapped sugar for certain sweeteners, that could help. Are you aware that in Denmark …’

Holly nodded as Ethan told her the difference between good and bad sweeteners and the merits of Stevia. He went on to cover the effect of flossing on longevity of life as she gazed at the dessert menu, wondering whether to go for the Eton Mess or chocolate fudge cake.

‘Do you agree?’ Ethan said as Holly became aware of him addressing her.

‘Absolutely. Healthy options. Best choice.’

‘Great, we’ll go to the health food store right after this and get you sorted.’ Ethan patted her hand.

Holly decided to pay attention to what Ethan said in future, not knowing exactly what she had agreed to.

Holly’s phone rang,Jaz Calling.

‘It’s Jaz. Do you mind if I quickly take this?’ she said, smiling at Ethan.

‘Sure. I’ll get us some more drinks.’ Ethan stood up and went to the bar.

Holly answered the phone. ‘Hi, Jaz, did you arrive safely?’

‘Yeah, it’s an amazing hotel. I can see the Mersey from my window. Where are you?’

‘I’m in Wells with Ethan, having a pub lunch.’

‘Really? So, you and him?’

‘He’s going to help me with the hub drawings.’

‘Okay.’ Jaz spoke in a slow voice.

‘Why do you say it like that?’

‘I never really liked him. Found him a bit anal.’

‘Jaz. Surely you’re not going to go all green-eyed on me?’ Holly laughed.

‘To be fair, hun, this is the first time I’ve spoken to you since the fire where you actually sound like yourself again. I guess Ethan must be doing you good.’
