Here we go,Holly thought as she groaned. She regretted mentioning him. She feared he would be on the case, complicating everything. She did not want him muscling in on the claims process.

Erin’s walkie-talkie buzzed and bleeped. Answering it, she spoke into the receiver attached to her chest. There was a burst of fuzzy feedback mixed with a voice that Holly could not hear properly.

Erin put her pen and notebook into her pocket and took in a deep breath. She stood up ‘Thank you for your time. The fire service has now ruled out suspicious circumstances. I’ll not keep you any longer.’ Nodding at Holly, she left.

Holly felt stunned. She sat in silence for over a minute until her mobile vibrated in her damp hand.Gary Cox Calling.

‘Hi, Gary.’ She felt breathless.

‘Holly, good news, I’ve still got to finalise the claim but I’m confident the insurance company will pay out.’

‘Thank goodness. Thanks, so much for your help.’

‘The thanks goes to that young man of yours, Ethan. He was at the fire station this afternoon. Has mates in the service, apparently.’

Holly ended the call. ‘Yes!’ She felt tears pricking her eyes. Ethan was definitely a great guy to have around. It was an alien feeling to her, accepting other people’s help after having been used to doing everything for herself for so long and being the one who helped others. She would have to treat Ethan to a meal to say thank you.

Standing up, she gazed at the closed curtain above the sink which masked the blackened nursery buildings. Now she could dream. Dream about her rebuild and plan her future. Dream of the things she wanted to achieve. Pulling open the curtains, she took a sharp intake of breath. Tom was walking up the path to the burned property with a suited guy in tow.
