‘You won’t be disappointed. Then we’ll return to the function room for the meal and presentation of the awards. And of course, Trudy Wall from the Arts Council will be speaking.’

Holly nodded. ‘I’m looking forward to that.’

‘Oh? Do you have a project in mind?’

‘Yes. A large project.’

‘I’d love to hear about it. We’re on the hunt for decent Arts Council applications to support. Between you and me.’ David tapped the side of his nose. ‘You should get any request in PDQ. There’s a limited budget.’

Holly smiled. ‘I’ve plans on paper with drawings.’

‘What’s your idea?’

‘To build an arts hub out in Eversley village.’

‘I’ve not been to Eversley yet. Although I’ve been here in Somerset for a few years now.’

‘It’s one of the smaller villages.’

‘Yes, I’ve heard of it, but not visited.’

‘I own a garden nursery there, so already have a profitable business on site. Or should I say, I did have. We recently had a fire.’

‘Crikey, that was your nursery?’

‘Yes, but the insurance has been approved. Whilst it’s been heart-breaking, losing so much, I’ve now got something to throw myself into.’

‘It’s refreshing to hear someone so incredibly positive. I’m sure Trudy will love you. I’ll introduce you.’

David led Holly to the Arts Council rep. Ten minutes later, Holly felt elated. It was great to discuss her plans with someone passionate about art. Whilst it was brief, Trudy said she would welcome her application, especially if it was supported by the local councillors.

As Trudy moved on, Holly turned to David. ‘Thanks for the introduction. It’s starting to feel more than just a dream.’

‘No, thank you for being full of energy. We must catch up and you can tell me more. Here.’ David fished into the inside pocket of his dinner jacket and handed her a business card. ‘Call early next week.’

‘Thank you.’ Holly smiled as she placed the card into the clutch bag that Jaz had lent her.

Hearing a bell ring, Holly turned her head towards the sound and saw the town crier had entered.

‘Oyez. Oyez. Oyez. Welcome one and all to the fair city of Wells on behalf of the Mayor and Aldermen. You are invited to view the delights of The Beauty of Somerset Exhibition, which is now officially open.’

Holly moved towards the exhibition and Mitch soon appeared at her side.

Mitch puffed, as if out of breath. ‘Nina’s a bit full-on.’ He rubbed the back of his neck.

Holly nodded but remained silent biting her lip.

As soon as they entered the exhibition room, Holly saw her painting and took a deep intake of breath. She beamed. It was in the centre of the room, underneath a spotlight. Mitch took her hand in his and squeezed it. ‘I’m proud of you, Holly Loveland.’

Lifting her eyes and seeing Mitch gazing at her, she felt a warmth wash over her body like a soft tropical rain.

He turned to study the painting. ‘It’s breath-taking. It’s you all over, making the every-day bright. Even with what’s going on in your life, you’re standing here, radiant and calm.’

Holly felt a lump in her throat and tears threatened her eyes. She did not want to make a fool of herself. Putting on a show was hard at times and she felt so many emotions just under the surface, ready to bubble over if she were to let her guard down. Blinking away one solitary tear she took a deep breath. Mitch squeezed her hand again, then led her towards the other exhibits.

After viewing the artwork, they took their seats in the function room which was filled with large round tables set out for the meal. Holly was happy to note that their seats were nowhere near Nina. Two more artists and a councillor sat at their table accompanied by one guest each. When Holly mentioned the hub to the artists, both took a real interest and they exchanged contact details. The food was delicious and Holly felt relaxed, as if she were at a friend’s wedding. The wine and conversation flowed and it felt natural to be with Mitch.

The town crier rang his bell again and gave David Bunning a comical introduction, before he stood up and addressed the room.
