‘You’d never guess, but it’s actually a little nightdress. I think it doubles up nicely as daywear, don’t you?’

Mitch saw the outline of a nipple.I need to tell her I’m not interested – now.He took a deep breath but before he could speak, Nina launched into conversation.

‘I met Holly today for coffee in town. We discussed holding a few breakfast meetings to help with her art project.’

‘Great idea.’

‘Yes, it is. And she told me all about you.’

‘Really?’ he said, wondering what exactly Holly had been saying about him.

‘Yes. Out here, caring for your invalid uncle and in need of female company. So I thought I’d come and cheer you up.’

I sound like a right saddo,he thought.Mitch shook his head. Was that how Holly saw him? She felt sorry for him? A lost cause?

Nina turned around, leaning up against the worktop. She picked up a bottle of red wine she had placed there. ‘Shall we open this? I brought it home after a trip to France.’

In the distance, Mitch heard Trixy barking and realised that Holly was arriving. He told himself to remain calm and discuss it with her later. After all, Holly probably had his best interests at heart. But he would be making it known to her quite clearly – no match making. He could see her hair glint as she passed the window and there was a rap at the door.

‘Expecting someone?’ Nina raised her eyebrows and smiled.

‘Hellooooo,’ Holly called in a bright voice.

Nina reached the door and pulled it open. Mitch watched Holly’s face as her mouth opened and her eyes blinked rapidly.

‘Come in. We’re opening a bottle of wine.’ Nina stepped aside to let her in. ‘Oh, not sure about your dog though.’ Nina pointed to Trixy. ‘I’m not really a canine fan.’

‘She’s not mine,’ Holly said, the brightness now lost from her voice as she shoved the lead past Nina into Mitch’s hand. ‘I won’t interrupt.’ She turned and marched away.

‘What’s up with her?’ Nina asked as she swung back to Mitch.

Trixy growled.

Mitch put his hand to his forehead. ‘Don’t ask me.’
