I’ve got to get out of here, she thought and turned.

Nina blocked her way, rummaging through a rail of dresses. She lifted up an ivory number with thin diamante straps. ‘Is she getting married? Your friend? She’d look stunning in this. And here,’ she said, pulling out a garish mother-of-the-bride outfit. ‘This would be ideal for you.’

Holly sidestepped Nina and made for the back of the shop, her folio bashing rails as she passed them.

‘I guess you want to try it on?’

Holly glanced over her shoulder, Nina followed with the cerise creation in hand, flashing her whitened teeth.

‘Toilet,’ Holly said. ‘I feel sick.’

Nina overtook Holly in a waft of Coco Mademoiselle as the shop door chimed behind them.

‘I need air, now,’ Holly said panting.

Nina threw open the metal back door. ‘I’ll get Tom.’ She turned away.

‘No …’

Holly stepped into the back yard, closing the door behind her. Tears ran from her eyes and nose as she fumbled in her pocket for a tissue. Whenever she tried to take in a deep breath it was caught in a sob, like an old car false starting. That’s what I am, the old banger and he’s got himself a sleek new model.Mopping her tears, she opened the back gate and marched through the service delivery area towards the carpark. How could things have changed so quickly?she asked herself. Reaching her green transit van, she climbed inside, placing her folio and mobile phone on the passenger seats. Taking a succession of deep breaths, she started the engine.

Again, her parents flashed into her mind. At the hospital, when the doctor told her. ‘We did all we could, but we lost them.’ She had felt numb, a cold nothing. But now, as she swung out of the carpark and headed for home, the uneasy nausea which she had been feeling for days, increased to an intense burning of her solar plexus.
