Jaz appeared at the door, with her face flushed.

Julian grinned.

Holly raised her eyebrows. ‘Hi, you two. You seem to be spending a lot of time together.’

‘Yes, we are,’ Julian said and put his arm around Jaz’s shoulders. ‘We’ve been in each other’s erm –’

‘Pockets.’ Jaz giggled and dug Julian in the ribs as he planted a kiss on her nose. Jaz looked over Holly’s shoulder. ‘Hi, Mitch.’ Then winked at Holly.

‘I came up to see Holly about the farmers’ market and I brought lunch.’ Mitch pointed to the carrier bag he had left on the table. ‘I’ve more than enough if you want to join us, although it’s only a crusty loaf, cheese and ham.’

‘Suits me.’ Jaz climbed up the caravan steps followed by Julian.

Holly opened her kitchen cupboard. ‘I’ll get us some plates out.’ She also fetched a knife, butter and a couple of jars of pickle.

Julian put out his hand to Mitch. ‘Sorry to hear about your uncle.’

Mitch shook his hand. ‘Thanks, mate. I’ll have to come into the pub sometime.’ Mitch turned to Jaz. ‘Holly’s told me lots about you.’

‘Oh dear,’ Jaz laughed and led Julian to the small dining table and they sat down.

Mitch emptied the items from the bag on the table. ‘Where’s Trixy gone? I haven’t seen here since I arrived. She hasn’t run off has she?’

Holly bit her lip, realising that she was probably asleep on her bed.

At the sound of her name Trixy trotted into the living area and sniffed around Holly’s ankles, then returned to the bedroom.

‘Julian’s had an amazing idea.’ Jaz placed her hand on his chest.

‘It was your idea, Jazzy,’ Julian said.

‘Rubbish. He’s being overly modest.’ Jaz squeezed Julian’s leg. ‘It was his idea.’

Holly sat at the table, as Mitch cut the bread into thick slices. ‘So, what’s the big idea?’ she asked.

‘Well, I was saying to Julian how I miss the fairs – you know, the ones we used to have on the village green?’

Holly nodded. ‘Until 2009, when the rains came and it wrecked the grass and they had to re-seed it.’

Julian laughed. ‘It was like Glastonbury. A right mudbath.’

Holly smiled. ‘I loved the stalls – the competitions, the animals, the music. I looked forward to it every year.’

Mitch nodded. ‘I went to one, only the once. Sid would never have gone, but I was up here with Mum. I loved it. We took one of Sid’s calves to show in the baby animal competition.’

‘Hey, I remember a calf being there once,’ Jaz said, as she sliced cheese.

‘Yes, it got loose,’ Mitch said.

Holly laughed. ‘No-one will forget that.’

Holly watched Mitch smiling, thinking that he got better-looking every day.She averted her eyes, focussing them on Jaz. ‘So, you want to start up the village fair again?’ She turned to Julian. ‘Do you have possession of the green as your tables are on there?’

Julian shook his head. ‘No, I arrange for the grass to be cut for the entire green, and the committee let me off rent. I can’t use it for any other purpose.’

Jaz glanced at Julian and then back at Holly. ‘We were going to ask you.’

‘Me? I’m not on the village committee.’
