And I sure as hell had fun kissing him.

What if his wolf had chosen me for a reason? What if he'd somehow seen that I was lonely, that I needed him?

I still wasn't sure I felt comfortable being the one who cared more, but Ebony was right that it wasn't a competition. If Jesse didn't like kissing me, I'd figure out a better way to do it, because I was damn sure I liked kissing him.

And if he only liked me because we were mates... well, I'd give him more reasons to fall for me. I knew I was pricklier than a damn cactus, and that I was far from the most loving, kind person on the planet, but I would try.

Because I was pretty sure Jesse was worth it.

My thoughts kept moving all the way back to Moon Ridge. I parked in the garage, and Jesse was opening the front door as I stepped in through the garage one.

For the first time possibly ever, he looked pissed at me. "What the hell was that, Teapot?" He gestured to the car. "You went to a bar, and I know you're not twenty-one. Then you ditched me after I kissed you, and went out for sandwiches with the friend you've barely talked to in months? I'm getting really damn confused here."

"Why didn't you like it?" I ignored his questions, asking one of my own instead. His expression morphed to one of frustrated confusion. "The kiss. Why didn't you like kissing me? Am I too slobbery or something? Is my mouth too small? Or—"

"Why the hell would you think I didn't like kissing you?"

"You were hardly affected at all, afterward. I was panting like a freaking dog, and you just waved at a guy and moved me out of the way."

"We were blocking the road. That has nothing to do with whether or not I enjoyed it, Tea." He raked hair out of his eyes. "You're fucking gorgeous, and you tasted like whiskey, coffee, and that minty lip gloss you use like it's Chapstick. I'm getting horny just thinking about kissing you again." He gestured to his junk, which was hidden by his coat. "I'm sorry I was shitty at showing that I enjoyed it, but you were looking at me like I'd just murdered a small animal, and my first kiss had just turned into a wet-dream-worthy make out session, and we were blocking the damn road."

"I was looking at you like you'd murdered a small animal?" I asked incredulously.

"Why else would I have apologized?"

"Jesse." I shut my eyes, exhaling slowly before opening them back up. "I only looked like that because I was shocked. I've kissed a decent number of guys, and a kiss has never felt like that before."

"Like what?" His gaze was intense.

"Like I never want it to end. Like I'm burning, and I never want the fire to go out. Like—"

He cut me off by crossing the distance between us and taking me in his arms. His tongue parted my mouth, and he devoured me.

My arms locked around his neck, fingers finding his hair and shoulders as we kissed. He lifted me up off the ground, and I wrapped my legs around his hips.

Emotions burned through me as our lips and tongues danced, and he hauled me into the kitchen, setting me down on the island. With my ass on the cold countertops, it was easier to adjust my position against his erection.

I groaned as he pressed against me, hitting me in all the right places.

"Jesse." I tilted my head back, and his lips latched onto the sensitive skin beneath my ear. He sucked, and I arched into him.

He stopped. "Not good?"

"It's incredible. Just don't leave a hickey."

He sucked harder, and I smacked him halfheartedly on the side of the head.

"You heal much faster than a human now." He flashed me a devilish grin before his lips caught mine again. Our tongues fought again, longer, our hands starting to explore the dips and curves in each other’s bodies.

But then my wolf interfered.

I cried out, my body arching backward as something in my spine cracked.

Why did the spine always go first?

"Easy," Jesse murmured, as his hand smoothed over my hair. He held me to his chest. "Stop fighting her. Let her have control."

I tried, I really did, but something inside me just couldn't help but fight the wolf. She wanted me out, and I wanted her out, and there was no peace between us.
