His chest rumbled like a lawnmower as I leaned harder against him, his mouth wrapped around my fingers like I was a damned popsicle.

Every damned pore I possessed was on fire—I was fucking burning.

“Zed,” I managed to pant. “Stop.”

The word was like a light switch.

His mouth and tongue stopped making love to my fingers.

His hand unlatched from my waist.

And then he stepped away from me entirely.

Suddenly, I felt like I was swimming in an ice-cold river, and I hated it more than I could say.

“Sorry.” His voice came out gravelly. “There’s cake downstairs. It’s fresh, if you want it now.” With that, he turned, and stalked down the stairs. His movements were so graceful he looked like a damn predator.

It took my mind a minute to catch up to the rest of my body when he was gone.

Cake… downstairs…

He’d baked for me?

Just because I wanted cake?

My mind spun as I walked down the stairs.

I knew I could be a bitch, and wasn’t exactly trying to stop myself from acting that way, but I wasn’t going to refuse cake that Zed had made just for me. After how well he’d been treating me, that would be a damned sin.

And I really did want cake, even if it was no longer at the top of the list of things I wanted.

I found two plates already dished up on the table, and a mouthwateringly-beautiful chocolate cake on the counter. It wasn’t the prettiest cake I’d ever seen, but I knew it would be delicious, and that was what mattered.

Zed had already walked back to the couch and was sitting there, staring at the screen again. Something was playing, but I knew he wasn’t watching it. Even from where I stood, I could see that he was stiff.

Stiff with anger or throbbing sexual need?

That was the question.

I hoped it wasn’t both.

Guilt thudded in my chest, alongside my rapidly-beating heart.

I’d probably hurt him. Or offended him. Or pissed him off.

Or… I wasn’t sure what he was feeling, honestly. But he had just been trying to be nice. Things had gotten out of hand, but I sure as hell had liked it. And I was feeling the overwhelming effects of the climax just as strongly as he was.

So, I picked up my plate of cake…

And then I picked up his too.

Grabbing both forks off the counter, I held the plates to my chest and walked across the room.
