FIVE

Emotions welled in my throat.

“She’s up?” Lizzy’s demand made my eyes sting with tears.

She was sitting on the edge of the hospital bed, hugging me fiercely, a moment later. My own hug was weak, but for whatever reason, peace coursed through my veins.

I was dying.

This… was it.

I didn’t want to die, but I was happy with the life I’d lived. It had been a good, good life. I’d donated money, I’d helped out friends and coworkers. I was proud of who I’d been.

“Did you call my dad?” I rasped to her.

“No.” Her arms tightened around me. “You’re not dying, Sab.”

My eyes closed, and I let out a slow, painful sigh. “Every part of me hurts, Lizzy. And I’m so tired.”

Lizzy let go long enough to look at Dax. “I know your wolf doesn’t want you away from her, but we need a minute.”

His jaw worked back and forth.

He didn’t want me, but his wolf did.

“Did you pick up my headphones?” I asked Lizzy.

Her eyebrows lifted, and she slipped off the bed long enough to grab my Bluetooth ear buds from the duffel bag sitting on a chair on the other side of the small room. My headphones were my second-best friend, which Lizzy knew well.

“Put these on, with noise cancelling,” I rasped to Dax, as Lizzy held them out toward him. “Then you can stay in the room and give us privacy too.”

Dax didn’t look thrilled, but jerked his head in a nod and took the case.

A moment later, he had them connected to his phone and was tucking them into his ears.

His back leaned up against the wall, and I tried not to let my gaze linger on him too long.

Gorgeous.

He was fucking gorgeous.

It was too bad he hadn’t gotten a mate he was attracted to, one whose body could handle werewolfism. I probably should’ve been hitting the gym instead of eating so many damn baked goods. But there was something so satisfying about biting into something sugary when I was feeling emotional… so I didn’t regret all the sugar cookies or anything else.

“How long have I been out?” I whispered to Lizzy.

“Two days,” she admitted. “The hospital wouldn’t let me stay the nights here, but I’ve been here every other minute. Dax stayed, of course—I think they’re all too scared of him to try to kick him out.”

I rolled my eyes.

Those damn things hurt too.

“He’s not scary.”

“Since you’ve been in here, he has become scary,” she corrected.

I couldn’t imagine Dax scaring anyone, but decided that wasn’t important given the situation, and changed the subject. “I need you to give me my phone, so I can call my dad. He needs to be here and understand exactly what’s happening, or he’ll destroy Moon Ridge when I’m gone.”

Lizzy’s eyes narrowed at me. “You’re not dying, Sab. We’re going to figure out a way to get you to accept the wolf.”
