SIX

My relaxation lastedall of one minute. That was how long it was before Dax’s phone vibrated against my ass again, and again, and again. The damn thing started having a party, which made the man grumble a curse.

He eased himself away from my backside enough to grab his phone out without rubbing my butt, and then settled back into place behind me. His chest was still to my back, and his phone was just a few inches from my face as he lifted his eyes far enough from my neck to read the texts on the screen.

The damn thing kept buzzing, texts coming in from Lizzy, and Elliot, and Jesse, and Tea, and Ford, and Del, and Rocco, and June…

The whole damn pack was messaging.

Or Lizzy was messaging them, it seemed.

She told them that Dax had yelled at the doctor, and the doctor was now guarding the door to keep everyone out—Lizzy included.

I bit back a snort.

She was getting various instructions to break down the door, growl at the doctor, ask nicely to be let in, bribe her…

Dax made an annoyed grunt and hit the speak button. His voice was growly as he said, “We’re fine. Sabrina’s wolf just didn’t like the way the doctor looked at me.”

He’d noticed her looking at him?

Was that what had caused my pain? My wolf’s possessiveness?

Dax hit the button to send the message, and another barrage of texts came in.

My eyes closed. Trying to keep up with them all hurt my head.

Dax spoke again, “Turning my phone off, give us privacy for the rest of the day. Thanks.”

He shut the phone down without waiting for responses, and tossed it to the foot of the bed.

“Will that really work?” I whispered.

“Doubt it. Might buy us a few hours though.”

My lips curved up in a tiny bit of a smile. “Lizzy will be pissed.”

“I’m your mate; Lizzy will survive.”

Something about the confident way he growled those words made my stomach curl slightly.

“You’re already starting to look better. How do you feel?” he checked.

“Less like I’m dying,” I admitted.

“Good.” His lips lowered back to my neck.

“What happens to you if I die?” I whispered.

There was a moment of silence.

“It doesn’t matter,” he finally murmured.

I tried to move away from him, wiggling a bit, and he growled softly.

“Let go of me or tell me the truth,” I growled back.

“Alright, alright.” His breath brushed my throat, nearly making me shiver as I stopped moving. “As you already know, when a werewolf’s mate rejects him, he loses his mind either slowly or immediately, hence Ryder’s growing insanity. When a werewolf’s mate dies without being changed, the guilt kills the wolf immediately—and the man with him.”
