THIRTEEN

My wolf eyedDax for a long moment. He was naked, sprawled across the bed, and staring at her with what was probably the calmest, happiest expression I’d ever seen on his face in the months I’d known him. He wasn’t necessarily smiling, but there was this softness in his expression and slight curve to his lips that was just freakin’ adorable.

My wolf nudged him in the arm, so he sat up, his back and shoulders raised and confident. I didn’t know why he was sitting like that, until my wolf started to slowly walk around him on the bed. She was sniffing him, poking him, prodding at him—her version of checking him out, I assumed.

When she was finally satisfied with her inspection, she plopped down on his lap, not seeming to care about his nudity or filthiness in any way.

He chuckled softly, and lowered his back to the mattress again. “Tired, huh?” he asked her, his fingers buried in her fur. “You did something incredible; you deserve some sleep. I’m proud of you.”

She slid further up his body, remaining on top of him as he tugged the blanket over both her and himself.

It was strange to be looking through her eyes. Lizzy had described it to me, but I hadn’t expected the quiet peace that accompanied taking the back seat while the wolf took a turn.

I guess something about the sex had relaxed me to the point where she had been able to take control. Or maybe it was just because our bond was solidified or something? In paranormal and fantasy romance books, sex seemed to seal the bond a lot of the time. So maybe that was it.

Or maybe it was something else altogether. Without knowing why my body had been fighting the wolf, I didn’t think there was really a way to know exactly what had triggered my ability to finally shift forms.

But with the calmness that accompanied taking a back seat to the wolf, I figured we’d look into it some more when we were ready.

For now, I just wanted to be with Dax. To figure out how we worked together, to talk about books…

Shit, had he really read everything I had read?

We were going to be having some weird-ass conversations.

My online besties were going to flip out when I told them that my “boyfriend” was a romance reader too, and then saw how freakin’ hot he was.

There would be time for excitement later though—my wolf seemed really exhausted, and when she slept, I would be forced to sleep, too.

Dax’s fingers rubbed her head slowly as she snuggled even closer to him, and then fell asleep.

Dax was out toowhen my wolf woke up. There was a knock at the door—and someone shouted Dax’s name outside.

My wolf listened, and nudged Dax in the arm.

He didn’t budge.

She huffed, and nudged him again.

And again.

And again.

He still didn’t budge.

Was he okay?

I remembered him saying he was a really deep sleeper—yeah, he was fine. Just dead to the world as he caught up sleep after the restless days in the hospital.

“I will break down this door!” the female voice I didn’t recognize yelled.

My wolf apparently decided she wasn’t going to deal with that woman or whatever her problem was, so she threw the control at me, starting the process to shift back to human form.

A silent shriek escaped me as the pain hit me like a damned train, and as soon as I had a human throat, I was crying.

That did the trick when it came to waking Dax up.

He grabbed me groggily, his eyes panicked as he held me securely to his chest. “Sabrina?”
