“You’re not in trouble; he is.” The cop’s gaze flicked down to the wolf, who growled louder at him. “Don’t take it personally. He’s the one we’re worried about, not you.”

I nodded, even though I was feeling guilty for getting Dax’s wolf in trouble.

The dried blood on his muzzle caught my eyes as I sat back down on the bench, though, and my guilt faded.

I definitely hadn’t asked him to hurt anyone.

Picking up my phone, I found a few texts in the pack’s group chat that Lizzy had forced someone to add me to a few months earlier.

She insisted that I was part of the pack, even though I knew I definitely wasn’t. I was kind of bitter about that, but tried to play it cool because I didn’t want her to realize it. And because honestly, werewolves were fascinating.

And because I wanted to find a mate, you know.

Apparently my plan had worked, though. It worked differently than I expected, but… it did work.

Ish.

I hadn’t expected to be mates with Dax, though. He wasn’t into me at all.

Scrolling through the group chat, I chewed my lip as I skimmed the messages. Lizzy had sent a text explaining what had happened at the restaurant to everyone. Everyone was shocked, and trying to come up with a way to get Dax’s wolf out of jail. But honestly, the wolf was pretty violent, so maybe jail was the best place for him right then.

Us, I mean.

Not him.

It’d be difficult to get used to being an, “us,” but I hoped I’d come around to it. This was what I’d wanted, after all.

I wasn’t ready to jump into the pack chat head first, even though I’d been a part of it for a while. So after muting that chat, I pulled up my messages with Lizzy.

Me: Is everyone okay? Did he kill anyone?

There was a pause, and then dots appeared, telling me she was texting.

Lizzy: No serious injuries. Everyone who was hurt has already healed.

Relief made my shoulders sag.

Lizzy: Did you feel anything for Dax before his wolf picked you? Any clues as to why it took so long? Any attraction?

I glanced over at the wolf and contemplated lying to her, but decided it wasn’t worth it.

Me: No. I thought he was cold and boring TBH. Attractive, but no more than any other werewolf dude. And he kept our relationship 1000% professional, so I know he wasn’t into me either.

Lizzy: Damn

Me: RIGHT

Lizzy: Elliot says it’s not that he wasn’t into you, it’s that he was respecting his mate by waiting for her, making sure not to get attached to anyone else.

I sent her an eye-rolling emoji.

Lizzy: Seriously. Can you imagine the mess if you guys were in love and he’d found out someone else was his mate?

Me: Someone else isn’t his mate, though. I am. And he didn’t even want to be friends

Lizzy: Werewolves don’t often do strong friendships outside their packs

Me: If he was into me, I’d be the exception
