Didn’t.

Know.

Him.

Holy fucking fuck.

“I’d like it to be our place,” Dax said, his voice edging on a growl. “Can we talk about this before you go?”

Could we?

I wasn’t in my right mind for an adult conversation. I needed to hug Lizzy and cry about shit first.

“We can talk when I get back. You’ll be here?”

He frowned. “Yes.”

“I’ve got to go, but I’ll see you then.” I leaned upward and gave him a quick, awkward kiss on the mouth before heading out. My car was still in the driveway, not the garage, so I grabbed the keys off their hook on my way out the front door.

I had the car turned on and put in reverse when the front door opened again and Dax came jogging out. I hit the brakes, unrolling my window when he came up to it. My SUV was small enough that he had to bend down a bit as he draped his arms over the window’s opening, leaning in toward me.

“Are we okay, Sabrina?” His forehead was knitted together, his lips turned downward in what I thought looked like uncertainty or fear.

“We’re okay,” I lied.

It wasn’t a complete lie. We hadn’t broken up or anything, and we’d just spent a week in bed together.

We were okay.

But I wasn’t okay.

“Please be careful with Lisa.” His gaze searched mine as he said the words.

“I will.” That was the truth.

Leaning further into the car, he brushed his lips against mine once, and then twice.

Goosebumps erupted over my skin as his tongue slipped into my mouth. The kiss wasn’t urgent or demanding, but soft and chest-achingly sweet.

Damn, I cared about this man.

Which was kind of a problem, considering I didn’t know him.

My phone buzzed in the cupholder, making a loud enough noise that Dax finally pulled away.

“Be safe, Sabrina.” His hand slid over my cheek and then over the back of my neck.

Something about the words felt like another, “I love you.”

I nodded, giving him a quick smile.

He finally stepped back, slipping his hands in his pockets but remaining in the driveway as I pulled away from the house.

What the hell was I going to do about us?
