Clay’s lips turned into a grin. “Good, now let’s get to the grand room. I need to talk to you about other matters.” I shook my head, his comment surprised me.

He pushed out his seat and rose from his chair before walking around to my chair and helping me to stand again. Clay took my elbow, and we strolled again.

“How are your studies going?” Clay asked. My footsteps echoes over the wooden floor as we walked through the enormous house. “I’m working hard, handing my assignments in on time and up to now it’s quite easy,” I said.

“Of course it is easy. We brought you up learning everything from a young age.”

“But why?” I asked and stopped to look at Clay. “Why do I need to have my law degree and take over the family business?”

“Because it could be a couple of more years before you fight the Dark King and once you defeat him, you will live a relatively normal life again.”

“Will I defeat him?”

Clay sighed, then smiled. “Lacey, you are the light. He is the dark. One on one, you and your magic are faster and more superior. But never underestimate him because black magic is always changing.”

I narrowed my eyes as I stared at him. “But light magic isn’t always changing?”

“That is something I want to talk to you about,” he said. “But before I talk to you about that, you need to think of your heir."

Chapter 41

Lacey

“Achild?”Isaid.I knew my voice was too high-pitched, but what on earth did he expect?

“Of course I mean children,” he said, as though he asked me nothing important.

“What are you talking about? I’m eighteen. I’m not ready for children.”

“Forget your age. This isn’t about age. This is about continuing the royal line before you go to war. It has to be done Lacey and the sooner the better.”

“Because you think I’ll die?”

“No.” Clay sighed. “There is not a soul as powerful as you, but that could change, and so we need to protect you because you’re different. The sooner you have an heir, the sooner you can go to war.”

“Different from what you expected?”

“Yes, you are different to... different to your father. The demon found you before time. Your magic started before it should have. And although you can’t be killed if you use your magic, that doesn’t mean the dark forces won’t be looking for a way to change that.” Clay stopped in the corridor, taking my arm. “If you die in the war, you may not appear again for hundreds of years, maybe more, if ever again.”

“I thought I was immortal.”

Clay turned away, not wanting to look at me. “You could in effect live forever, but... there are ways for you to die. The power you hold would defeat most others. It depends what they could do to render you powerless.”

“Render me powerless?” I blew out a breath and changed the subject back. “I’ve just started university. How am I supposed to have a child?”

“Your baby will live here, with me.”

I twisted my head and stared at him.

“The father has to be someone you’ve bound to,” he said.

I shrugged my shoulders. “I think Carter thinks I’m marrying him.”

Clay narrowed his eyes and stared at me for a moment. “Let’s go inside.”

A guard opened the large wooden door to the grand room, first the smell of burning wood hit my senses and then the heat from the roaring open fire in the corner gave a soothing warmth over my skin. I strolled to the large window which overlooked the courtyard to the front, a smaller window looked over the vast grounds to the rear.

The guys stood and Clay shook each of their hands, then sat on a large leather chair at the head of the room. I took a seat near to him on the sofa. Seb sat next to me. I watched as Ryan sat on the chair opposite, but Carter and Kane remained standing, taking their positions behind me.
