She stood still for a few seconds, calming down—I hoped. Then turned and gazed at me; I shook my head. Her eyes flickered with the same gold I’d already seen. Drawn to her, I stood and walked over when she held out her hand and I pulled her to me and hugged her tight.

She fell apart in my arms, sobbing and her shoulders and body shook too hard. I pushed back her hair and kissed at her forehead. “It’ll be okay,” I whispered into her ear. “We’ll find out everything in the end and I’ll help you.”

“I think we should leave this conversation for another day,” Clay said as he rose from his seat and walked to where we stood.

“When you’re ready, Lacey. I promise I’ll tell you everything you need to know,” he said. “But you need to control the magic when you’re emotional. You still have a lot to learn.”

Clay turned to me and gave me a small nod. “Take her home, she needs to rest.”

I nodded my head to him, putting my arm around Lacey’s back. Her head dropped onto my shoulder and I pulled her closer to me. I was glad she wanted me. I was glad she had asked for me to be next to her in her hour of need. Rather than Seb, that surprised me more than anything else.

I think it shocked the other guys, too.

We followed Clay out of the room as he walked us to the car.

“I need to speak to you in private before you leave, Lacey,” Clay said.

Lacey walked over to him and wrapped her arms around him. “Sorry, I know we only have each other now. I don’t mean to be horrible, but I need to find out the truth.”

“You will.” He hesitated for a moment as he looked at her. “I love you, Lacey. Please always remember that.”

She smiled at him. “I know and I love you too.”

“It seems to me, you have more than me.” He looked over his shoulder and gazed at me, Seb, Carter, and Ryan. Lacey turned and looked at us.

“It looks cosier than it really is.”

“Don’t make it harder than it needs to be. I wish one woman loved me, never mind four.”

“There are my protectors, they don’t love me.” She looked around at each of us. “But they saved me.” And I knew what she meant by that comment. She no longer had a desire to die. I smiled, suddenly understanding that was because of each of us.

Clay closed his eyes for a moment. Lacey rubbed her hand down his arm.

“Ah, uncle Clay, I’m sure Aunt Margot loves you. Once you talk to her, you might find she’s under the influence of someone or something.”

He gave her the weirdest look, stared at her for the longest time, and smiled. Running a thumb over her cheek.

“You look so much like your mother,” he finally said.

Lacey hiccuped a sob and gave him a hug. “I miss her so much, but at least we still have each other.”

“We’ll always have each other,” he said. “Always remember that.”

She nodded slowly. I strode over and put my arm around her, pulling her close to me and stroking her shoulder. She looked up at me, gave me an enormous smile before turning back to Clay.

“I need a nap. I feel zapped but I’ll come and speak to you tomorrow.”

“Thank you, Lacey,” he said and looked at me. “And Kane, thank you for looking after her.”

“It’s my pleasure. I love her.”

Lacey turned to me. “You love me?”
