“Have you found out any more about my parent’s deaths? What I asked you to look into?”

“Yes, there was one case your father worked on, but I can’t tell you here,” he said, stopping when he saw my surprised face. He stared at me. “You know why, and I don’t want to discuss it in the open. Those discussions are in my home only. Come home at the weekend and we can chat about that and about Carter. There are things you need to know and I should have told you before now. We also need to discuss your parent’s home… your home,” Clay said.

I shook my head. “I can’t,” I whispered, and held a palm to his face.

Clay nodded, and I looked away to see the two guys staring as they strode out of the restaurant with a bag full of food.

“Happy birthday,” Jack said. We locked eyes briefly as I smiled.

“Yes, happy birthday,” Blake said.

“Thank you.” I gave them a grin and a nod, waited for them to pass, and turned and gave a quick glance over my shoulder as they walked out of the restaurant.

Blake turned his head over his shoulder and smiled, and I realised I caught the attention of Yuri, who sat at the table behind. He rolled his eyes at me, ogling the guys.

I lifted one shoulder in response.

What is a girl supposed to do when two hunks are around?

Chapter 6

Lacey

Pollyscreamedwithlaughter, fanning her hand dramatically over her face, because I told her about my ex-boyfriend being in the university and having gorgeous friends.

“Is it evil?” I finally asked, biting on one side of my lip.

“Yes, definitely, but I don’t believe you’ll actually do it. I mean, it’s a great revenge but extreme, don’t you think?” Polly said. “And what if you do it and find out he was innocent all along.”

“But why would someone make me think it happened?”

Polly dug her fork into an unappetising microwave meal, not that it mattered to me because I ate a delicious Chinese meal when I went for dinner with Clay. Surprised he ate outside his home, but I knew his own chef cooked it or, at the very least, supervised it.

“Testing something on you, testing your magical skills. I don’t know… do you feel it happened?”

“No,” I whispered. I can only recall the seeing, but I have no real feelings of it. Apart from hate.”

“You know that some of the fae kingdoms use mind manipulation. Could it be possible that Clay did it to you, tested your abilities and you somehow have to work your way out of it?”

“Well that’s a bit evil to use my ex boyfriend like that,” I said, chewing on my lip as I considered it. “Clay wants to discuss it with me at the weekend, but until I know the truth my ex is still guilty.”

“You just want to take revenge before you find out the truth,” Polly said, laughing.

I reared by head back and erupted into a fit of laughter, holding my side as I walked away. Before I turned. “Can you believe one of them offered, though? If I wanted to, I don’t think it’ll be that hard to get him back.”

“Lucky you, does he have a name?” she asked as she walked to the bathroom.

I thought for a moment while she was away, wondering if Carter mentioned it. I was sure he hadn’t told me himself. She walked out of the bathroom and to her wardrobe. She glanced my way and I raised one of my shoulders. “I can’t remember it but I’ll show you him if we have any classes together.”

It wasn’t much longer that Polly pulled on a pair of jeans and ankle boots, making me feel a little overdressed. Her baby pink off the shoulder top was as extravagant as she got. At least she was wearing make-up, which made her look a little older than she did during the day. Her chocolate coloured hair criss-crossed expertly on one side, and the black eyeliner around her eyes turned her cute look into something much sexier.

Actually, a bit badass in a way.

“I was thinking a temporary boyfriend would hurt him more than a one-night thing. He’d never know unless I flaunted it,” I said. “And I’m not sure I want to brag about a one-night stand.”

“I know someone who might fit the bill,” Polly said with a grin.

“Oh, interested,” I said and peered down at my mid-thigh black sequined skirt that I bought today. Everything I bought I knew my uncle would hate, and once he found out the full extent of the purchases I made, he was going to have a fit.
