I never thought it was an accident, not that I could get anyone else to believe me. After working on the report for some time, I blew out a breath because everything I’d found up to now was exactly how it should be.

Dropping the report on the table as I took another sip of water, then stood and paced around the room because I knew I was missing something. But what?

Bang! Bang!

I twisted my head at the loud knock on the door. “One minute,” I shouted, placing the glass on the table, and sauntered over to the door and pulled it open.

My eyes narrowed in an instance but I stared for too long. “Whoa,” I yelped as his large hands picked me up and carried me into the room. He threw me onto the sofa.

“Where were you?” he hissed. He stood back, crossed his enormous arms over his wide chest, and glared at me.

“Excuse me. Who on earth do you think you are?” I yelled.

“I’m the person who tells you to do something and you do it,” Kane spat, not changing his stance.

I burst out laughing. “You’ve got to be kidding?”

I pushed my hands onto the sofa and rose a little. He pushed me backward and my mouth dropped open as I scrambled into the corner of the sofa, away from him. I’d give him that, but not much more. If he pushed it, he’d know about it.

He placed his palms on each of my shoulders. He leaned closer and his gaze caused a heat to rise in my chest, and slowly it worked its way to my face. Yes, freaking pink cheeks damaged my normally tough exterior and I took a few breaths, trying to calm myself and hoped it was just me that felt warm and wasn’t showing on my face.

“You look fucking hot when you blush. It makes you look…”

Did I want to know?

“It makes you look attainable. Less ice goddess.”

“Huh.” What the hell did that mean?

His eyes bored into me as he watched for a moment. But he dragged his gaze away as he leaned over to the coffee table, lifted the glass, and took the report of my parent’s accident. I narrowed my eyes at him and snatched the report from his hands.

“Why do I think I know you?” I asked after a brief silence.

He arched a brow. “You don’t, you’re mistaken.”

“Iwillremember,” I said, shaking my head because I didn’t believe him. “Anyway, you need to leave. I’m busy,” I said, pushing away from him and stood up and walked to the door, peering over my shoulder, making sure he followed me. I turned back to the door and placed my hand on the handle, listening for his footsteps and ready to pull, but my body jolted when his large, rugged hand slammed on the door and boomed right beside my ear. The sound echoing around the room.

I inhaled a light breath as he closed his chest against my back. He left just enough distance for me not to feel his body, but I felt warm air as it tickled against my neck and a different type of goose bumps chased down my arms.

“Sit down,” he barked into my ear. I side-glanced at his face and his eyes, which flickered with annoyance. “I want to talk to you.”

I shook my head and chortled. He scooped his large arm around my waist and pulled me back tight against his chest. His other hand captured my throat, holding me tight. I waited for him to do something, say something, but it was as though he didn’t know what to do next. We both stood silently facing the door.

His nose against my neck as he inhaled, making his breath quicken behind me. I didn’t know if I should turn to see those hazel eyes of his, or heel him in the groin. Instead, I stayed calm as I was taught in these situations, and I was much calmer than him because his T-shirt felt damp against my back as his laborious breaths tickled against my neck.

He slowly turned me toward him.

“What do you want, Kane?” I whispered, and my voice came out purring, and I almost kicked myself.

His perfectly groomed brow rose.

Blinking hard, I needed to slow my racing heart. I also had to work out what was happening between us, because whatever it was, it was unexpected. Slowly I opened my eyes, he didn’t intimidate me and instead of looking away; I stared into his familiar eyes. His face lowered to mine, and I waited to hear what he had to say.

But he didn’t say anything, his lips touched mine and I gasped. Not only because he had done it but surprised at how gentle he was. I hadn’t expected a kiss at all, never mind one that was so light a feather couldn’t have touched my lips any softer.

He kissed me again, and I moaned into his mouth. My eyes widened and although the sound was light and quiet, it took me a few seconds to soothe my beating heart. But I did, and the anger built up again and I swiped my heel behind his knee and quickly pulled my foot, causing him to crash onto his back.

I gripped his hips with my knees as I straddled over him, and smiled as I closed in on his face, almost touching his nose, and I think he thought I was going to kiss him when his lip curved on one side.
