I wondered why Seb was one of her chosen Knights. Apart from flirting with Lacey, I couldn’t really see how he would help her when the time came. Despite that, he was closer than the others and had something we didn’t have.

I’d have to look deeper into that.

I sighed, closing my eyes and rubbed my chest again.

“I’m going to order pizza,” Carter said after a while in his quiet state. “Anyone fancy one?”

I didn’t answer because I knew he hadn’t spoken to me for days.

As much as I wanted to tell Lacey, it was her I wished to be with. I couldn’t do it because I felt inferior to everyone else. Each of them had something that held them closer to her. Me, nothing personal, nothing that fastened us together already. For me, I needed to bind to her for that.

I had to bind to her and claim her. It was expected.

“Yeah, please,” Seb said. “I’ll ask Kane.”

Seb sprinted the stairs two at a time to speak to Kane. Suddenly, it seemed the thought of pizza invigorated them. I inhaled deeply through my nose and turned away to work on my computer. Deciding I needed to bump into Lacey somewhere and explain it was only her I needed, and I was being a jerk for thinking about my ex.

“Ryan?” I diverted my gaze from the screen to see Carter, more surprised because I’d not expected to hear my name. After nearly two weeks, someone had finally said something to me that resembled more than a grunt.

“Yep,” I said and rubbed at my chest.

“Would you like a pizza?” Carter said, staring at me.

I stood up, putting my hands on my hips and leaning over, and took a few deep breaths. “Yes, please,” I said, closing my eyes and running my hand over my sweaty brow.

“Are you okay?” Seb said, staring at me. “You look like shit.”

“No,” I whispered, and as soon as the word left my mouth. I rubbed harder at my chest as though something was squeezing the air from my lungs. I opened my mouth and inhaled a sharp intake of air. Blinking hard as I lowered my head and sucked in another long breath.

“Ryan.”

I looked up at the voice and closed my eyes.

Carter’s hands grabbed at my shoulders, shaking me hard. “Ryan.”

“Shit, he’s having a heart attack. Phone an ambulance,” Seb shouted.

I plunged my hand into my chest. “Lacey… she’s…” I wanted to say she was struggling to breathe. Was this our link? Was I feeling her pain?

“What’s wrong with Ryan?” Kane asked Carter.

“He said ‘Lacey,’” Carter said as he turned to Kane.

“Shit, something is wrong with Lacey.” Kane’s eyes widened. I glanced at Kane to see he had gone deathly pale. “We’re shit knights again,” he hissed.

“Fuck. I think he is feeling her pain,” Carter said.

“And you’re all stood here doing nothing. Call her, track her. Where is she?” Kane bellowed.

“Ryan, it’s not your pain. Pull yourself out of this,” Seb said. “Can you feel her, Carter?”

I wanted to punch Seb. He got to read her mind and have her read his dirty thoughts and I get her goddamn pain.

“No, somehow she switched it off after the argument,” Carter said.

“Shit, me too.”

Seb sat me in the chair and turned me around and placed my hand on the keyboard. “It’s not real, Ryan, but she’s still linked to you. She hasn’t switched you off, Ryan, but it’s not your pain. Relax, because you need to find out where she is the good old-fashioned way.”
