“You don’t have to tell me anything.” She sits down on one of the wooden chairs. “But if you want to talk, I’m here to listen.”

I sit across from her, a small fire pit between us.

“It might feel good to say it to another person, I suppose. I haven’t even told my mom yet. She’s going to be devastated.”

“She only wants what’s best for you. She will be sad at first, but she loves you.”

“Yeah. I just can’t help but feel like I’ve let her down. That I’ve let him down.”

I take in a stuttered breath, then take a long drink of my wine. I set the glass on the table and tell her everything.

“I’m glad to hear it’s not anything crazy like he cheated on you or had a secret family you didn’t know about.”

“I mean, at least if it were that I could hate him. I can’t hate him, though, knowing he’s doing what he needs to do to be happy.”

“So, do you have any sort of plans right now?”

“I haven’t even thought that far ahead.”

“I understand. And you don’t need to. You take it day by day, hour by hour, or minute by minute. Whatever helps you process and get to a good spot emotionally, physically, and mentally.”
