Chapter Twenty-Six

Grayson

"WHERE ARE YOU GOING to go?” Chris asks after I tell him what I talked about with my mom.

“I’m not sure yet. Part of me wants to go to Texas, another part wants to go to Washington DC, another part wants to go to Maine. I hear they have puffins there.”

Chris perks up. I knew that would get his attention.

“I mean, probably not this time of year. But if you decide to go to Maine to see puffins, I’m going with you,” he says

“I figured as much,” I tell him and laugh.

“But, no, I’m not quit sure where to go. Mountains, A lake, the beach, monuments. There’s so many options.”

“Well, I’m happy for you, man. It seems like this is important to you.”

“I’m pretty excited about it. I still need to talk to Gennie. Not sure if she will consider this quitting or an extended time off.”

“You know she will make it work for whatever you need.”

“I suppose she might.”

I grab Chris another beer from the cooler and pop the top.

“On me,” I say

“Thanks, man.” he takes a swig from it and sets it down.

“I’m going to miss ya, but I agree with your mom. I think this is what you need to do.”

“I’ll miss you, too.”

I slap my hand down on the counter.

“Alright, enough of the mushy stuff. Let’s get this Saturday night going.”

I grab the remote, turn the radio on, and crank the volume.

Everyone hollers whenI like it, I love itis the first song up. The bar is full for the most part. Everyone is having a good time. I am definitely going to miss this.

When I wake up Monday morning, I feel refreshed. Like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I am ready to do this. I sit up in my bed and see Sharkbait waiting in the kitchen. He meows at me then walks towards the cupboard.

“Yeah. Yeah.” I say and get him his breakfast. I bend down and pet him while he eats.

“I’m going to take you to a new home. There’s lots of space to roam around. Chickens to chase, but not kill, and a nice lady who will give you anything you want.”

He ignores me and goes about eating his food.
