Chapter 1

Sarah

“Thisisit.Ijust know he is going to propose to me,” I say, fluffing the waves I curled into my long auburn hair.

“I think you’re right.” Chrissy says, looking at me from my bed as I check myself over in the full-length mirror.

Christina has been my friend since grade school. We are thick as thieves, and she is the yin to my yang. While I’m quiet, reserved, and would rather stay at home bird watching and reading books, she is outgoing and opinionated. She gets me out of my shell but also knows when it’s important for me to beinmy shell.

“I mean, it’s been a year to the day, and he’s taking me to my favorite restaurant.”

Chrissy stands behind me and reaches around to “fix” my boobs, so they are just a little perkier in my low-cut dark blue dress.

“You don’t have to convince me. I don’t know why he wouldn’t propose. If I liked chicks, I would never let you go.”

I swipe at her hands and pull my dress up a little higher.

“They don’t need to be on display. He’s seen them.”

“And?”

“You’re ridiculous.”

“Love you too, bitch.”

I grab my favorite nude lipstick and swipe it across my lips. Then I, toss the tube into the small black clutch.

“Here, wear these,” Chrissy says handing over my four-inch black stilettos.

“Hard pass. I’m wearing my Janes.”

She rolls her eyes and returns them to my closet and comes back with my black Mary Janes.

“At least you have the sexy librarian thing down.”

I put my shoes on and stand. My stomach fills with the small flaps of butterfly wings. It’s a week after Valentine’s Day, and we waited to celebrate since it would be our one-year anniversary.

“Do a spin,” Chrissy says twirling her finger around in a circle.

I do and she whistles at me. “Smokin’ babe.”

At this point, my nerves have taken over, and I’m ready to get this night started.

“You got this. Chin up. Chest out. Breathe.”

I take a deep breath, and then I hear a knock..

“He’s here,” I say, a little too giddy.

I walk quickly to the door, Chrissy on my heels. When I open it, Chad is standing there, a single rose in his hand. He looks handsome. His brown hair combed to the side in a swoop, his suit a dark blue with a crisp white shirt underneath.

“Hello gorgeous,” he says as he leans in to give me a kiss on the cheek and hands me the rose. “Are you ready to go?”

I take the rose and pass it to Chrissy who is peeking from behind the door.

“I am.”

“You kids don’t stay out too late, now,” she says.
