Chapter 2

Sarah

“Hebrokeupwithyou?” Chrissy asks me for the second time.

“Yup.”

“A week after Valentine’s Day?”

“Yup.”

“On your anniversary?”

“Yup.”

“And you smashed a potato in his face?”

“He told me to calm down and that I was acting like a psycho. What else was I supposed to do?”

“Fair enough. You handled it better than I would have.”

“Ugh,” I groan as I sink farther in the passenger seat. This might be the worst night I have ever had as an adult.

“Listen. First of all, fuck Chad. I never liked him anyways. Second…”

“Wait, you didn’t?”

“Nope. The way he interacted with other women made me uncomfortable. But he made you happy, so, I figured he was just a people person, and it was something I had to get used to.”

“And second of all?”

“Second, you deserve better. Did you two even have anything in common?”

“Not really, but opposites attract. Isn’t that the saying?”

“Yeah, and we can see how well that went.”

I glare at her, and she lifts her shoulders. “Hey, I’m just pointing out the obvious here.”

“Thanks, friend.”

We drive a couple blocks in silence. I’m still in shock. I really thought my life was going a different way tonight.

“Did you eat any of that potato before you made it his face mask?”

I shake my head.

“Good. Let’s go get some Hibachi. It will take your mind off it, and I know that’s what you really wanted to eat tonight.”

“I don’t know if I'm up for it. I feel so drained.”

“Well, let’s at least stop at the grocery store and grab some sushi. I’ll go in, and you can stay planted right there.”

“That sounds much better.”

Chrissy pulls into the parking lot, “I’ll be right back,” she says as she gets out of the car.

I sit for a few seconds before I pull out my phone and open my pictures. Every other one is of me and Chad. At dinners with his coworkers, realtor events, house closings, and the more I scrolled, the more I realized all these pictures of us were taken when we were doing something that had to do with his work.
