“Okay, Ethan. Bye.”

“Bye.”

I don’t turn around to look again until I am in my car. I glance over my shoulder and see that he’s still standing there. One hand on the door handle, the other rubbing the back of his neck.

I pull away and watch in my rear view as he goes back inside the building. Well, that was interesting to say the least. He has to be at least ten years older than me but damn, he’s hotter than any guy my age.

As soon as I get to the store, I do the first thing I think of and call my sister.

Chapter Nine

Ethan

IrememberedDr.Madrismentioning something about outside vendors, but I thought she meant for the pet food. Not that I’m complaining because Lily, she was something else. She was quite small compared to me, probably around five foot five. She had long wavy brown hair and dark blue eyes. Her smile though, those full lips, it was stunning. I haven’t had a woman pull me in like that for some time. Only problem, she looked like she was about fifteen years younger than me.

I walk over to the counter where she put the cookies in the basket. Each bag has a label on the top with the pet store name, number and her name, Lily Hall.

“Well, Lily Hall. Age is just a number...right?”

“What’s right?” I hear someone say as they walk out from the back. It’s Alexis.

“Oh nothing, just mumbling to myself.”

“Gotcha. Well, you have a very full day. I wrote your schedule down on the big marker board in the treatment room and the smaller one in your office.”

“Perfect. Thank you.”

“Of course,” she says, then flips her hair and gives me a sweet smile as she turns to sit in the chair at the front desk.

Halfway through the day, I sit down at my desk with a turkey sandwich and take a lunch break. If I wasn’t talking to a client, Lily was running through my mind. The way her hips swayed as she walked back to her car, made my cheeks flush slightly.

I click the mouse a few times to bring my computer back to life, then I search Furbabies Pet Store. The home page tells the story of how two sisters brought the store to life. I click through pictures of the store, events they have had there and pictures of Lily with her sister.

I finish my lunch, check the marker board then head to my next patient.

“Good afternoon, I’m Dr. Walker.” I shake the woman’s hand.

“And this is Max?” I ask her, as I peek around her legs at the tan Staffordshire Terrier that is huddled, trying to be as small as possible.

“Yes. He’s a little nervous.”

“That’s ok. We won’t rush anything.”

I grab the treats from the counter and take a seat on the floor a few feet away from Max.

“Hey buddy. Do you like treats? These are pretty good ones.”

I lay a few on the floor between us. He leans out a little, his eyes going from the treats to me.

“Max, your mama brought you here to get a check-up and I know that’s not fun.” I keep eye contact with him whenever he will give it to me.

He stands and takes a couple steps towards the treats.

“There ya go, buddy. Eat all of them if you want.”

“Do you have any concerns for Max today?” I ask the owner.

“Nope, just his annual stuff and update any vaccines.”
