“I wouldn’t think a small position as an assistant would impact the CEO.” I heard the bite in my voice. Usually, I’d show more difference to Stone, but no one could blame a girl for being out of sorts in such a situation.

Stone tipped his head a little. His assessing gaze slides down my form again.

My hands were sweating, and I wanted to wipe them on my pants. I remained still.

“An assistant of any company officer is a top-level position. When Bryce isn’t there, you will sit on various meetings with him or for him. The board was made aware of all candidates and voted.”

Oh, hell. That was something I didn’t know.

“Oh.” I did wipe my hands this time.

“So, again. Why didn’t you take the position?”

The temperature in the room seemed to elevate, and my heart was racing. When I turned down the job, I thought it wouldn’t matter to anyone, and a vague answer would suffice. Once I started to show, people would believe it was the best situation.

“Well, I—”

“I’ll caution you about lying to me or giving me some lame-ass excuse like you gave Bryce.”

My clothing felt tight and constricting, but it didn’t stop the rod that wedged in my spine at his words. “Excuse me?”

“My words were clear, Aubrey.”

Pissed, I stomped across the distance between us. “You have no right to tell me what I can or can’t do. Who do you think you—”

He cupped my face when I was in arm's reach. His touch silenced me and allowed me to hear his words' low, deep tones. “I have every right as the father of your baby.”

I gasped. “How do you know?”

His thumbs followed the bones of my jaw to my chin. “Let’s just say a very pissed-off brother confronted me thinking I’d left you in the situation alone.”

Shaking my head, I asked, “How did he know?”

Stone’s brows scrunched. “About the pregnancy?”

“I never told him it was yours, and I wouldn’t have shared that with anyone.”

“Apparently, not even me.” He lowered his hands, and I caught the shadows in his eyes when he turned away. He seemed to take in the smallness of my condo in one glance.

“I just found out a few nights ago.” I quickly explained. “I have a doctor’s appointment later today to confirm it.”

“Is there a chance you’re not?” He faced me again.

Was that hope in his voice?

“Only if two tests were wrong.” There had been two in the box. So, I’d peed on them both simultaneously and hoped for the best. “I want you to know I did pick up a pill the next day, as I said. It never dawned on me to think my sickness was due to pregnancy.”

“They're only about eighty-nine percent effective.”

“What?” I had so many friends who had taken them during college, like after-sex Tic-Tacs, I didn’t even know that efficacy was so low.

He gave a sharp nod. “Reason I always use a condom.” One side of his mouth curled up. “Well, ninety-nine percent of the time.”

A laugh bubbled up at his words.

“Are you planning to keep it?” His tone was flat, and I wasn’t sure which way he wanted me to answer.

I went with honesty. “Yes.”
