Her eyes flew open. “Ourwhat?” she whispered.

“Date.”

“What do you meandate?” she asked, though it came out garbled and sounded something along the lines of‘wbat dyoo m’eight?’She hadn’t moved, so her face was still smashed to the cold lab table.

“You know, I’m gonna presume you asked about our date, even if I can’t understand you.”

She nodded where she lay, because she was too stunned to move. Anton was asking her on a date. There had been flirtatiousness in his voice. What was going on? She was way too sleep deprived to deal with this.

“Yeah, that’s it,” she croaked finally, because they weren’t on video so all the nodding in the world wasn’t going to do her any good. Though, she was glad they weren’t on video because he didn’t need to see her in her current state.

“So, that’s a yes, then?” Anton asked. He sounded…excited. A little breathy himself. Grace propped herself up on an elbow. She had thought Anton might be having a cocktail because he needed to unwind, but she could hear a slight tremor to his normally smooth voice. He was nervous.

Hells bells.

She made Anton nervous.

“Yeah, I-um, yes, it’s a yes. Big yes.” She stammered and stumbled out the answer with a nervous laugh.

“Okay then, so it’s settled,” Anton said, sounding slightly more in control of himself. A touch more like the slightly cocky, but always playful man she had gotten to know.

“What’s settled?”

“Our date, Muñoz. Keep up over there. Thinking it’s a Monday and all.”

She grinned and rolled over until she was laying on her back. She shouldn’t be laying on a lab table. It was against protocol. Her protocol, but there was no one here to see, and this was her realm so…whatever.

“Is this a real date?” she asked him, swinging her feet that hung over the edge of the table. “Like I’m not, ah, I’m not misunderstanding, am I?”

“What do you mean is it a real date?”

“I mean, are you taking me out to romance my ass or is this a friend date thing? I really, really, don’t want to get mixed signals here, Kovalev.”

He chuckled. The rich and low sound of it made her close her eyes and she kept right on swinging her feet like she was a smitten teen, and not a manager in a high dollar lab.

“No mixed signals. Done with that.”

She opened her eyes. “Oh, you are?”

“Yeah, definitely romancing your ass.”

“Why the change of heart?”

“Could be those romance novels you had me read. Good homework,” he told her. Was it just her, or had his voice gone a touch lower. Whatever it was, it was…working for her. She felt it right in her belly.

She flushed hot. Her skin went warm, and she swallowed. “Homework? I was never the homework kinda girl.”

“Extra credit then?” he tried.

“Now that I could see,” she giggled, the sound surprising her because she giggled, but not like this. She snorted and laughed. When she giggled it was not because a man was being sexy. It was because of antics and well timed jokes. Because one of her science horde had done something funny to entertain her. Because of reality television.

But this was different.

Her giggle was strictly meant to flirt. What the hell had happened in the past eight hours? Was she hallucinating this all in her sleep deprived state? She’d gone from thinking…no, lusting, after Anton right before bed and now here they were with the man asking her on a date, and she was giggling of all things.

Any second now she was going to wake up. She knew it. No other way it was possible.

“Okay, then we’ll go to dinner. Somewhere quiet and fancy.”
