So, I guess my mother did get the surprise proposal she was hoping for.

ADAM

"Whew, that was quite a party," I say as we slide into the back of Phyllis's Lincoln Town Car and Mel closes the door. I can't believe the woman I helped get off the airport tram was Kit's grandmother.

"You're going to have to explain to me how you and my grandmother came to be such buddies," Kit says, snuggling into me as I drape my arm over her shoulders. "But not right now," she says, her lips hovering over mine.

I hear Mel clear his throat. "Back to the airport, sir?"

"Yes, please," I tell him and then he raises the privacy glass. I catch his eye in the rear-view mirror and he winks before heading out into traffic again.

And then I pull my girl close and kiss her with all the pent-up longing of the last awful months. She melts into me, and my heart feels whole for the first time since July.

When we part, she cups my face in her hands. "I'm so sorry I ran off. I was just so scared. I don't want to tear your family apart. I never want to come between you and your siblings." In her statement, there's a question.

"They can all go to hell if they can't be happy for us," I say, and she gasps. "I mean it, Kit. You're the only person who matters to me. You above all others."

"Bu-but," she says and I put my finger over her lips.

"Hush," I say, "stop fussin'. They are all, including Boone, looking forward to you coming home with me."

She lets out a breath and relaxes. "Really?"

"Well, I had hoped to spend our time in the car a little differently, but..." I pull out my phone and hit Boone's number. She answers before the first ring ends.

"Adam? Are you there? Did you get there in time? Where are you? What's happening? Where's Kit?"

Kit laughs. "Boone! It's so good to hear your voice."

"I'm so sorry," Boone says. "For everything. I'm a jerk."

"There will be plenty of time for that later," I say.

Caleb and Deacon get on the line too. "Hey, Kit," Caleb says. "Looking forward to seeing you soon."

"Thanks, Caleb," she says. "I'm not sure how soon we'll be there, but I'm looking forward to seeing you too. All of you."

"Hey Adam," Deacon says, "I called in some favors and greased a few palms."

"I'm listening."

"Well, long story short, there's a private jet waiting for you guys at the airport. Should have you in Ponderosa Pass in three hours and you'll be home in time for Christmas dinner with the family."

KIT

I'm snuggled in the back seat of Grandma's car with Adam. I can't get close enough. Can't believe it's him and though my hands and eyes tell me it is, I refuse to let go just in case I've imagined the whole thing.

He's not complaining. He drags me onto his lap, and his hands rove my body and I cling to him hungrily. He kisses all around my face: forehead, eyelids, jaw and finally my lips. His hard cock prods at my backside and I squirm over it. "Settle down, kitten," he growls into my ear. "We'll be on the plane soon, and then you're all mine."

My whole body melts from the inside out and I sigh into his embrace, resting my head on his chest and listening to the pounding of his heart. "I still can't believe you're here. That you came to get me."

"I'm sorry it took me so long to get my head out of my ass," he says, resting his chin on the top of my head, pulling me closer into his embrace.

"I'm sorry I left the party without talking to you," I say, then sigh. "Oh hell, I'm sorry about a million different things." I lean back and look into his face. "I hope you can forgive me."
