"Hello, Blondie."

Those two words were all it took to bring tears to her eyes. But she didn't want to cry. She wanted to feel like she had the night they met.

After forcing back her tears, Katie turned around. Though she knew what she'd face, she’d decided to pretend she didn't. But then, once again face to mother-hulking chest with him, remembering what he looked like without the skin-tight shirt, what he felt like under those crotch-hugging jeans, Katie's body betrayed her as it did before.

"Hello, Muscles." Her eyes traveled lazily up his torso. When they met his, it took everything she had not to throw herself at him. Kiss him fiercely and tell him everything she wished she'd said instead of writing that stupid note.

"Would you like a drink?" she asked shifting her feet to move around him.

Isaac reached out an arm curling it around her waist when she stepped next to him. "Not tonight."

Her lips twitched insisting she smile. "Isn't this when you ask me to dance?"

A different kind of smile curled Isaac's lips. "We could do that or we could say we did and go upstairs instead."

"Lead the way."

Chapter 45

"You know, when you suggested we start over, I didn't realize you'd meant it literally," Katie said after Isaac shut his bedroom door and the party faded behind it. "And was that Jake on the skateboard?"

Isaac nodded stalking toward her.

"Nice ass."

Isaac laced his fingers in Katie's hair over her ear caressing her cheek with his thumb. His eyes bore into her. Searching.

"It was just a joke," she said out of breath for no good reason.

"I know. That's not the problem."

"But there is a problem?"

He brought his other hand to her other cheek. "I want to start over."

"So do I."

"But I can't."

Katie's heart plummeted into her stomach aching to take everything back. Wishing she could actually go back in time, not write that note. Stay with him.

"Maybe we could have started over if my feelings hadn't changed as much as they have."

She'd taken too long to figure it out. He'd moved on.

Then, what was this? Torture? Getting back at her for breaking his heart?

Tears welled in her eyes as her throat closed in.

Run. Go. Get out, Katie.

Her mind screamed at her. Drowning out everything around her. Including Isaac. His lips moving but no sound reaching her ears.

No.

She would not run. If he didn't want her back, then at the very least she could get the closure she needed to move on.

"Katie?" Isaac's eyes filled with concern. "Did you hear what I said?"
