“What?” Seth asks also out of breath.

“How much will it take to buy her out of this deal?”

“You can’t afford it,” Seth deadpans.

“Try me,” I growl, ready to pounce again. Blacken his other eye, for starters.

“It doesn’t matter. The club took a vote. I can’t undermine it.”

“For fuck sake, man. You’re talking about whoring out your own sister-in-law? You can’t—.”

“He won’t,” Candace interrupts. “Because if he does, there’s no telling what I might say in a moment of weakness. In bed with any one of his brothers.”

“Candace, please don’t,” Misty says but reserved, in a way that makes me think she doesn’t fully mean it.

Seth stands there, seething. His chest rises and falls as he casts all amounts of ire in Candace’s direction.

“Then we’ll ask you again,” Candace says with the utmost confidence. “How much?”

I don’t know what the hell Candace is talking about but it’s getting results so I don’t stand in her way. There’s no amount of money she can agree to that will be too much. I’d give every last dime I have to get her out of this.

“There isn’t enough to keep them from asking questions,” Seth says, pulling Misty to his side. Holding her like it may be the last time. The fear surrounding them is palpable.

What the fuck does Candace have on him?

Whatever it is, it’s big.

“Then I guess it’s time for you all to start coming up with some answers,” Candace says, looking between Seth and her sister.

Suddenly and unexpectedly, a smile reaches Misty’s eyes but disappears as quickly.

“It’s okay, Seth,” Misty says, placing a hand on his chest, over his heart, as she looks up into his eyes. “We were going to have to face it someday. Maybe this is the sign we need to show usnowis the time.”

Seth finally lets out a long sigh. He nods then turns to me. “I’ll have a number for you tomorrow.”

“I’ll have my accountant make the transfer.”

Reaching out, our hands meet halfway to shake on it.

And just like that, it’s over. Candace is free.

Chapter 13

LIAM

“Everything will change now that the Kings know that I have money. No doubt, they will try to find ways to take it from me. I would not put it past them to try to use you and your sister to do it. Are you ready to face that with me?” I ask Candace, in the car on our way home.

“Maybe we don’t have to,” Candace says.

“What are you thinking?”

“How attached are you to your money?”

I tilt my head, eyeing her curiously.

“I was just thinking…” She says as though still forming the thought. “They can’t take your money if you don’t have any money for them to take.”

“Get rid of it?” I ask, intrigued.
