“But what about Mason?” Aurora presses. “Are you two a thing again?”

The question has plagued me from the moment he saidI love you, but—“I wish I knew. But guys, I’m the one who hurt him.”

“You hurt more than him,” Kinley says.

I reach for her hand and squeeze. “And I’m sorry. Truly, I am.” I grab Aurora’s hand too. “It was a shitty thing I did to all of you. I promise to make it up to you both.Afterthis luxurious spa day.” I nod to the interior door at the back of the coffee shop. “Looks like they’re open—”

My phone chimes, and I look down at the table. Instantly my body warms from the inside out.

“You have to save your booty call for tonight,” Kinley says, collecting our empty coffee cups and disposing of them.

“I think it’s a date.” I hold out my phone for them to see.

Mason:Meet me at the theater at 7pm. Wear a dress.

“It’s a date,” Kinley says confidently.

“Definitely a date,” Aurora agrees.

Another chime.

Mason:You won’t be wearing it long.

CHAPTER16

Mason

Only one more signature, and I’ll be the proud owner of the local theater. I had hoped for it to be official by this evening for my special date with Willow. That way when I ask her to marry me, she knows that this place is for her. But it’ll be done soon enough. Maybe in an hour, maybe tomorrow.

The most important thing is that I won. The developer rescinded his offer. Wes said something about Etta Carver waving around her shotgun at him when he stepped foot in town. I’d have paid to see that petite, elderly woman cussing out a suit. With any luck, someone caught it on their phone and posted it on YouTube.

I light the candle Freya pilfered for me from Gran’s house and set it in the middle of the table. I didn’t have much to work with in terms of props. Only what was left backstage, covered in an inch of dust. But there’s a table set for two and a couple of chairs that sit sort of level. Most importantly, Willow’s lucky flowers.

“Lookin’ good,” Freya calls from the back of the theater, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. She marches down the aisle, a paper bag in hand. The aroma of steak drifts my way, making my stomach growl. She picked up the dinner from the local steakhouse,Mountain Prime. I’d say it was out of the kindness of her heart, but the look in her eyes says differently.

“Spit it out, Freya.”

“You sure about this, Mason?” She sets the bag on one of the chairs, and I start unpacking the meal. “She abandoned you. In front of the whole town. You know, in the most humiliating way possible. You’re really going to propose?Again?”

“You think I’m a fool?”

“I think love makes us do stupid things.”

“Like dye your hair purple?”

Freya narrows her eyes at me. “It’s not stupid. It’s trendy.”

“I was thinking impulsive.”

“Spontaneous is the proper word. And it’s only a few strands. Got to feel it out before I dye it all purple.” Freya rolls her eyes at my expression. “You’re missing my point, big brother. I was there that day, remember? A bridesmaid with a front row seat to the show.”

“She wasn’t ready then.”

“What if she’s never ready?”

I tug my sister into my arms, forcing a hug on her that turns into a breath-stealing squeeze. “When you meet the one, you’ll know.”

“Okay, Romeo.” Freya wriggles out of my embrace before I can screw up her messy bun with my knuckles.
