“I know,” Kinley groans, sitting on the edge of the stage. “You’re sure you don’t have any cooking skills?”

“I burn toast.”

“Aurora started a fire at the last kitchen she worked in. Two hours after she started.” Kinley lets out a sigh. “What are we going to do? Grandma June will kill us if we run the diner out of business.”

“What about your friend Rowan? Doesn’t he like to cook?”

Kinley turns her head down and stares at the floor, her legs kicking gently against the stage.

“Kin?”

“We sort of had a falling out while you were gone.”

“But you two are best friends.”

“Were.” Kinley lets out a heavy sigh. “Besides, he’s too busy getting ready to take over the family logging business. So even if he didn’t hate me, his dad would never go for it.”

It’s amazing how close we’ve become in the past week considering how at each other’s throats we were when we reunited. I feel like I have my sister back. Even if she’s making me grovel a bit. I deserve that. Before I can ask what happened between them, the door burst open at the back of the room.

Aurora comes running down the aisle. “Hide me!”

“What—”

She dives into a row of seats and disappears seconds before the theater door opens again. This time the police chief, Garrett Bradley, comes strutting in. His uniform shirt, though dark, is stained with liquid and whipped cream. It doesn’t take me much to put together what happened.

“Aurora Gray in here?” Garrett asks.

“Haven’t see her,” Kinley says.

I shake my head to agree with her.

“If she comes by, please let her know I’m looking for her.”

“Will do,” I say with a wave as he turns to leave.

It’s two solid minutes after the door closes behind him before Aurora pokes her head up from the row she’s hiding in. “Is he gone?” she whisper shouts.

“Yes, Aurora,” I say.

Her shoulders drop in relief as she makes her way to the stage, her expression guiltier than ever.

“Did you spill your coffee on the police chief?” I ask.

She nods.

“That doesn’t sound so bad. Why are you hiding from him?” Kinley adds.

“Because I tried to clean it up.”

“Okay.” Kinley and I look at one another, both trying to understand why this is such a big deal.

“I touched his cock!” She slaps both hands to her mouth to cover it. “On accident,” she mumbles through her fingers before dropping them. “I was trying to wipe off the coffee I spilled, and well, some got on his pants. It was a total accident. But you guys. He’s big. Likesobig.” Her brown eyes widen. “And I’m so mortified. Can he arrest me for that?”

“You have a crush on him, don’t you?” I guess.

“What? No! He hates me.”

Before the direct line of questioning can continue, the door opens once again. Aurora drops to the floor like a bomb went off.
