“I wish you could.”

“Want to stop for a burger on the way home, Endy?” Dad joined us, smiling and safe and everything I missed. Or a good part of it. “As I recall, the food is great at school, but they don’t do burgers.”

“No.” I picked up one of my bags and shook it. “But they do muffins.”

I swear Dad drooled a little, making me glad I’d brought a dozen or more. “Peri-berry?”

“Among others.”

On the way home, I ate a double cheeseburger and a huge bag of onion rings washed down by a chocolate shake. My parents shared one of the muffins. The rest were going in the freezer. To them…they were the taste of home.

I didn’t know yet what my decision would be about going back in the fall, but if I did, there’d be a whole lot more muffins in my bags when I came home for the holidays.

Following Mom and Dad into the house, I twitched my shoulders. I wasn’t supposed to bring out my wings, not here. But they were my heritage, my parents’ heritage, and if I went back, I’d try my best to restore them to that. “Mom, can you tell me more about why you’re here instead of there?”

“No.”

I had to go back. For that and so many other reasons. Two handsome visages filled my mind. Zephyr’s kisses, Bain’s concerns for me at the veil… Maybe one day I’d end up back here, permanently, but if I didn’t give myself a chance to explore everything the Sciathain Academy offered, I’d always wonder. About everything.
