“Your Majesty, Janis,” Arne called out while grabbing the back of Bors’ hair and forcing him to his knees. “What justice would you have me do?”

I walked forward and looked at Bors. He had always been the monster of my dreams, both awake and asleep. This was the moment I’d been waiting for, yet I felt sorry for him. He’d pursued a life that wasn’t his.

And by my hand, or by my order, he would lose what semblance of a life he still owned. He’d escaped from the High Council’s best prison.

“I won’t have him be a threat to any of my people or any people that walk this earth. Do what you must to end this pathetic excuse for a person.”

I forced myself to watch. Otherwise, a sliver of paranoia would creep in over the years and plague me. Leif took Bors’ hair in his hand and made my uncle lean forward and in one slow second, Arne severed his head.

The threat was over.

My kingdom was whole.

And I was surrounded by love in so many ways.
