There was a loud knock on the front door, and I jumped. It couldn’t have been Nate because he had a key. I had my gun in the waist band of my red suit this time. My hand was on the handle as I slowly moved toward the door.

“It’s just me, Addie.”

I sighed. It was just Charles. I took my hand off my gun and opened the door. He held up his hands.

“I come in peace. Nate told me where you were, so I figured I’d stop by.” He smiled, slowly lowering his hands.

I returned his smile and took a step back so he could walk into the house. “You called Nate and not me?”

“Well, I didn’t want to bother you if you were busy.” He shrugged. “And I figured he was the person who would know.”

I closed the door behind him.

“So, this is…”

“The Gilded Cage,” I replied proudly.

He nodded his head slowly as he looked around the room. “Nice. Very fancy and yet it feels comfortable.” He moved toward the lounge area and plopped onto one of the velvet chairs. “Very comfortable.” He pointed toward the stage. “Explain.”

I shrugged. “I have ideas.”

He grinned. “I bet you do. I’m curious to see what happens there.”

“Me too.”

“Are the fucking rooms upstairs?”

My mouth opened and then closed and then opened again. “They’re called guest rooms.”

“But that’s what they are. Isn’t it?”

“I mean… technically… no, that’s not… what are you doing here?”

He laughed, a big, hearty laugh that reminded me of his father. “I just wanted to see you,mi donna.Check on you. Make sure you’re okay.” His blue eyes were as blue and as beautiful as the chair he sat in.

“I’m okay. Or I’m trying, anyway.”

“If you say so.”

A chuckle escaped my lips and his eyebrow twitched.

“Sounds like what Eli said.” I chuckled, shaking my head. “If you say so.”

“So, what’s up with you two, and his brother Rory and his ex-girlfriend?” He smirked.

I burst out laughing, remember the dinner party. It seemed so long ago. “I didn’t know she was his girlfriend. As far as Eli, we’re friends.”

He cocked his head to the side. “Are you?”

“We’re more than friends.” That was all I was going to say about it. We were in love with each other, but it wasn’t public knowledge, since we were from different Crime Families. But frankly, it wasn’t his business. It was… complicated.

He just laughed. “Okay.”

I tilted my head to the side. “Did you come here just to mess with me?”

“That was the overall goal, yes.” He grinned, wiggling his eyebrows.

“Mission accomplished.” I rolled my eyes.
