“I never stopped loving you either. And I already know that you’ve changed. I saw you in court for me every day even when I pushed you away. And you came to the wedding today when I desperately wanted to see you.” She looped her arms around his neck, pressing herself even closer to him.

“You did?” He stroked his fingers through her hair.

A dislodged forget me not drifted to her bare shoulder, and all she could think about was getting through the reception to be alone with him later.

“I did. At first I thought I wished you into being there, but it was really you, turned out in your custom suit, looking all kinds of edible.”

His eyes darkened and he bent to brush a kiss over her lips.

“You’re the edible one,” he breathed the words over her damp mouth. “And I’ll prove it to you later.”

Desire pooled in her belly even though it was the wrong time for that. They had so much to navigate if they were going to be in one another’s lives again, but first they needed to celebrate her sister’s big day.

Still, all of that would be a joy because on the other side of it would be Gibson. Not just for a night or a week.

Forever.

A yellow leaf drifted down from a nearby tree, an early sign of fall that came to rest on Gibson’s shoulder before she brushed it away.

Summer was ending, and a new chapter of her life would begin. Here in Catamount. In a house next door to both of her sisters. She could work remotely for a while. Start a new practice here.

Become the wife of a bison rancher, which made her smile again.

But all of that would wait until tomorrow.

“We should rejoin the party,” she murmured. “Everyone will wonder what happened to us.”

“I bet they could guess,” he argued, smoothing his hands down to her waist. Over her hips. Lower. “And I don’t think anyone will worry.”

Her smile returned. She couldn’t seem to keep it off her face, not that she wanted to try.

“We’re really doing this? Getting back together?” She ran a hand along his freshly shaven jaw. Her heart full.

“If you mean are we really going to be together forever the way we once promised each other we would be?” He lifted her higher against him, so they were eye to eye. “The answer is yes.”

“Thank goodness.” She tipped her forehead to his, breathing in the man and the moment. “And to be perfectly clear, this time I’m never letting go.”

It was his turn to smile as he turned toward the tree line so they could return to the wedding party.

“That’s what I was hoping you’d say. Now, it’s the perfect day to drink a toast to the happy couple and celebrate happy-ever-afters.” Gibson lifted their joined hands to his lips so he could lay a very deliberate kiss on the ring finger of her left hand.

Where a ring used to be.

She knew him so well. She felt the promise in that kiss. Knew that a ring would rest there again one day.

For now, she simply planned to celebrate this love they shared, the love they couldn’t walk away from.

Every. Single. Day.
