Page 68 of Never with Me

One hand grips my hip while the other slides behind my neck. “Say it again,” he demands huskily.

“I love you.”

“Ramsey,” he breathes. I watch as he swallows hard, and his eyes become glassy. “I love you too. I’ve wanted to tell you, but I didn’t want to scare you away.”

“We’re a pair, huh?” I chuckle as relief washes over me. Deacon Setty loves me!

“I think we’re the perfect pair,” he says, kissing me deeply. My heart trips over in my chest from happiness. There are a million butterflies in my belly, and this moment is one I will never in my entire life ever forget. He pulls back and leans against the couch. “Before I get so far into your kisses that I can’t think right, let’s get back to your job. You know I work at a law firm, right?”

“Ha ha, funny man. Yes, I’m aware.”

“The partners have been tossing around hiring a paralegal. They’re slowing down and giving me more of the work. They’re not ready to hire another attorney. In fact, I think they’ll offer to sell to me before they do that, so the hiring will be my decision since I’m the one who will be dealing with the new hire.”

“Thank you. I appreciate that. However, I don’t want to get the job because I’m your girlfriend.”

“What about as the woman I love?” He bats his eyelashes at me.

“That either.” I laugh. “I want to know I can make it on my own. I know that sounds crazy, but that’s one of the big things my father used to tell me. That I was nothing without him and that I would never make it in the world without his connections or his money.”

Deacon’s jaw twitches. “He’s a piece of shit.”

“I know, but I still need to do this. I want to do this. You’ve given me the courage and the motivation to take the risk. I’ve been living to work. Just saving every dime, but I have an education, and I think I would enjoy the work.”

“If you don’t, you can go back to college or find a new career. You can do anything you put your mind to.”

“I always wanted more, but now that I have you, and you’ve been helping me express what I want, I know working at the Tavern forever is not my end game. I want a career. One day when I have children, I want to be home with them at night. I want family dinners where they tell me about their day. I don’t want to miss a game or a practice or a school function. I want my kids to have the opposite of what I had. Don’t get me wrong. I never wanted for anything, well, except for my parents’ love and attention.”

“Our kids will always know how much we love them. I promise you that.”

“Our kids?” This is the second time he’s said something like this.

“You did hear the part where we told each other that we were in love, right?”

“Yes, but kids, that’s a big deal.”

“We’re a big deal, baby.”

Those damn butterflies swarm, and I feel light-headed from how happy he makes me. The future kids he just mentioned, I can see them. I can see our life playing out like a movie reel in my head. “Yeah, I guess we are,” I say, kissing him. “Thank you for the offer. I promise that if I need help or guidance, and I’m sure that I will, I will come to you.”

“Or you could come for me right here,” he says, sliding his hand under my shirt.

“That works too.” I shiver as his thumb glides across my bra-covered nipple.

“This fucking bra is so thin. Let me see.”

I raise my arms in the air and allow him to lift my shirt over my head. He licks his lips, and his grip on my hip tightens. “Like what you see?” I tease.

“Love, Ramsey. I love what I see.” His head dips, and through my white lace bra, he sucks a hard nipple into his mouth, causing me to moan.

“Are you ready for bed?” he asks.

“I’m ready to go to bed. I’m not ready to go to sleep.”

“No? You want to play?”

“Sure, but I also want you to make love to me.”

He freezes, and I’m afraid I’ve pushed too far until a slow sexy smile tilts his lips.

“Anything my girl wants, she gets.” He nips at my bottom lip. “I’m going to lock up down here. I’ll meet you in my room.”

“Okay.” I move to climb off his lap, bending over to pick up my discarded shirt from the floor, and he smacks my ass. “Hey!” I pretend to be offended.

“It was right there in front of me.” He shrugs.

“You’re lucky I love you.” I point my index finger at him.
