“I never should’ve let you go. I should’ve killed you just like I killed your mom.” Her dad rared his foot back to kick her again.

“Hey, Cass. I got out of practice ear-” Jamal swung her door open and stared in shock at her father standing over her.

“Well, well. Just the man I wanted to see.” Her dad reached into his back pocket, pulled out a pistol and pointed it at Jamal. “I was just discussing with my daughter here how I wanted to talk to you.”

“Jamal, just leave!” Cassie cried, wiping the tears off her cheeks. “This is just between us. Just go. Please.”

“No can do, missy,” her dad said, pointing the gun her way. “You stole something from me and I want it back. Or I want the rest of what you have and this man to make up the difference. Seems fair to me. Whaddya say, Jamal? Fair?”

Jamal nodded his head. “Fair. Just leave her alone.”

“No, Jamal!” Cassie yelled desperately. “Don’t do thi-”

Her dad turned toward her and kicked her again, this time right in the face when Cassie as she was pulling herself off the floor. “Shut up, you dumb bitch!”

Jamal took the opportunity to slam into her dad’s back since his gun was now pointing Cassie’s way. Her dad spun, trying to aim the pistol toward Jamal. Jamal grabbed the arm holding the gun, the one her dad was pointing in the air. He pulled the trigger, sending plaster raining down on top of Cassie’s head.

Jamal took his other arm and swung it toward her dad’s head, punching his temple and sending him crashing into the wall. The gun dropped from his head. Cassie reached down and grabbed it, pointing it at her father with shaking hands.

“Drop the gun!” Cassie turned to see two police officers standing in the doorway of her apartment. It was the sweetest sight she had ever seen. Cassie dropped the gun and fell to her knees.

“Thank God!” she cried. “Now just help Jamal! Please!”

“I don’t think we’ll have to worry about helping him,” the police officer replied.

Cassie turned back toward her father and Jamal, seeing Jamal sitting on top her her father’s back, holding him firmly on the floor.

“We got a call over the scanner that there was a domestic disturbance at this apartment,” one of the police officers said. “One of your neighbors called it in. They said they heard yelling and things being thrown around. We were just around the corner so we got here as quick as we could. What’s going on?”

“This man,” Jamal said, nodding his head toward her father, “Is her father who abused her for years. Check the hospital reports if you don’t believe me. They’ll show unexplained broken bones and other injuries. Injuries the doctors wrote off as accidents because he’s the sheriff of a small town in Alaska. She ran from him when her mom died. Her mom left her a hefty sum in life insurance and he came back for that. There’s a legal document showing the money is Cassie’s.”

“How did he find her?” one of the policemen asked, training his gun on her dad.

“I haven’t figured that out yet,” Jamal said.

“He when he was watching the game where you jumped over the chair and kissed me on the kissing cam,” Cassie whispered softly. “I’m so sorry. This is all my fault.”

“You have him?” Jamal asked the police officers.

“Yes sir, Mr. Jenkins,” one said, placing a set of handcuffs on her dad and raising him up off the floor. “You go take care of the lady. We’re going to take him to the station. Make sure she’s ok. We’ll just need to take a statement after you go to the hospital.”

Jamal nodded, dropped the gun and ran Cassie’s way. He sat on the floor with her and gently pulled her into his lap.

“Are you ok, Bambi?” he asked, tenderly putting his hand under her chin and raising her face so she was looking him in the eye. “I’m so sorry I didn’t get here sooner.”

“You didn’t know,” she replied, burying her head into his chest. “I’m just glad you’re here now. Where’s JJ?”

“Trevin took her to the mall. She forgot one present and wanted to buy it today since she knew you were coming over. I told them we’d meet them at the house.”

“Thank God,” she said. “I don’t ever want her to see anything like that.”

Jamal gently pulled her off the floor. “Let’s get you to the hospital.”

Cassie cringed. “Please no. I have had this happen so many times I know what to expect. My ribs aren’t broken. They’ll just send me home with some pain medication that we have to wait hours for. I don’t want to ruin JJ’s Christmas. Please.”

Jamal kissed her on top of her head. “Whatever you want, Bambi. Even though I don’t agree with it. But we still have to go into the station to make an official statement.”

Cassie sighed. “At least someone will finally belive me. I just hope we don’t have to stay a long time.”
