Jamal did his best to give his friend a convincing frown. “Whatever.”

“That’s all you got? Whatever? Seems to me I’m not the only one who iswhipped,”Kyle said with a knowing grin. Jamal refused to take the bait.

Drake, Kyle’s teammate from Duke, popped his head in the doorway. “You guys ready to get this started? I got a call from upstairs. It’s about to go down.”

Jamal clapped Kyle on the shoulder. “You sure? I got a good exit plan.”

“No thanks, man. I’m marrying the girl of my dreams. What else could I ask for?”

Jamal smiled and followed the groom up the stairs. He liked to give Kyle a hard time, but it was obvious to anyone who looked at the couple how in love Kyle and Callie were with each other. It was indeed about to go down, and Jamal really was happy for his friend.

Jamal walked to the back of the crystal bridge where the bridesmaids were waiting for their groomsman and the cue to walk down the aisle. Jamal walked to where Bambi was standing, her back facing him. She was breathtaking. Her hair was done up in some sort of fancy twist and her peach-colored dress hugged her in all the right places, emphasizing her tiny waist and perfect curves.

“Your dress sure is pretty, Bambi,” Jamal said as he walked up behind her and whispered in her ear. “How’s your eye?”

Cassie jumped at his words.

“Don’tscareme like that, Jamal!” Cassie said, turning and facing him, eyes wide. “I almost wet my pants!”

Jamal stared at Cassie, a stunned look on his face. “Your eye, it’s –“

“Covered up by a really good makeup job from Aria,” Cassie finished, her face breaking into a beautiful smile. “Trust me, the black is still there.”

Without thinking, Jamal cupped Cassie’s face in his hand. “You look beautiful, Bambi. Probably the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Cassie’s face blushed a beautiful shade of pink. “Thanks, Jamal.”

“I would lean down and kiss you right now, but I’ll wait until we’re alone,” he said, smiling when he heard Bambi’s gasp of surprise as her eyes widened in shock. “That’ll be something to keep your mind occupied during the ceremony.”

“Who says I’d give you permission to kiss me, mister?” she said back, pulling away from his touch.

Jamal started to answer, but his daughter interrupted their conversation.

“Oh my geeee, Cassie! Your eye is all better! How in the heck didthathappen?!” JJ walked up to the couple and wrapped her arms around Cassie’s waist in a hug. “It’s a miracle!”

“A miracle called makeup and an amazing makeup artist,” Cassie said, smiling over JJ’s head. Jamal tried not to think about how his heart skipped a beat when she sent that smile his way. “Trust me, it still hurts.”

JJ looked up at Cassie, a sad look on her face. “I’m really sorry, Cassie. I didn’t mean to.”

Cassie leaned down and looked into JJ’s face. “It’s ok, JJ. Really. Besides, I learned how to catch-”

JJ looked at Cassie in amusement. “Really? You call catching with yourfacelearning how tocatch?!”

Cassie laughed. “Fair point. But I got to watch a really awesome movie, too.”

“True story.”

“You ready to walk?” Jamal asked Cassie. “It’s JJ’s turn to walk and then us, the most important people in the wedding party.”

“Except for, you know, thebride and groom,”Cassie replied with an eye roll. “But you keep thinking the world revolves around you, Jamal. I wouldn’t expect anything different.”

Jamal laughed. She had some spunk, that’s for sure.

“I guess it’s my turn,” JJ moaned. “I can’t believe Callie made me wear a dress. It’s soembarrassing.”

“You’ll survive, kid,” he said, patting her on the head. “Now get to throwing those flowers.”
