Maddy wiped her eyes as the last strains of the chords reverberated through the cabin. Kyle got to his feet and handed his guitar to Todd.

“Maddy.” He approached her and took both of her hands into his. “I’ve lost the diamond ring, but I’m gonna find it, I swear.”

She half-laughed and half-sobbed, and Kyle grinned at her. “I love you. I want to go home to you and only you. Will you marry me?”

She started nodding before he’d even asked, and once he had, she said, “Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you.”

Joy like he’d never known—even when he’d signed his name to the record contract he’d wanted for a decade—poured through him, and he dipped his head to kiss her. Hadley led a round of cheering, and the sounds Todd made by clapping his hands on the guitar made Kyle cringe.

He kept the kiss short and chaste, which wasn’t hard with how much both he and Maddy were smiling. “Come on,” he said. “Let’s go see if I can find the ring in the truck.”

“It wasn’t there,” Todd said.

“Okay.” Kyle still wanted to get Maddy away from everyone else so he could kiss her properly—now that she was his fiancée.

ChapterThirty-One

Maddy couldn’t believe she was finally engaged. She’d never been proposed to before, and that song had been beautiful and special and totally Kyle. He always sang from the heart, and Maddy loved listening to him play the guitar and let his emotions come from his soul.

“Todd couldn’t find the ring,” he explained as they gained the front porch. “It’s in the glove box.”

“That’s kind of a pit,” she said, glad her voice wasn’t too nasally. “You have to admit.”

“Yeah,” he said. “I do kind of throw everything in there, intending to deal with it later.” He took her down the steps and sidewalk to his truck and the passenger side. He opened the door and popped the glove box open. He rummaged around in there, and Maddy could admit she wanted a diamond to show off. She wanted to send pictures to her friends and family, post on social media, and hold her hand in different positions to see how the gem would reflect the light.

“It’s right here,” Kyle said with a hint of disgust in his voice. “I swear, Todd would lose his head if it wasn’t attached to his body.” He turned toward Maddy and snapped back the lid on the black velvet box.

She suddenly only had eyes for the gem. “Wow,” she whispered. “Kyle, this is too big.” She looked up at him, wonder and happiness filling her over and over again.

“It’s the cut you like,” he said. “Round, the jeweler said.”

“I love it.” She held out her left hand so he could slide the ring onto it. He did, and she lifted that same hand to his face. She slid her fingers slowly up and into his hair. “I love you.”

“I love you too,” he whispered. “Thanks for taking a third chance on me.”

“However many it takes, right?”

“Yes,” he murmured. “However many it takes.” He kissed her then, and this was far better than the sloppy, smiling kiss from inside. She treasured his touch, and she let his love for her move through her. She hoped he could feel how much she loved him in every stroke she gave back to him.

He broke the kiss and said, “I can’t wait until March.”

“Me either,” she whispered as he touched his mouth to her neck. “Where do you want to get married?”

He straightened and met her eyes. “Would your family come here?”

“I think so.”

“Well, I met you here,” he said. “We started dating here. I fell in love with you here. We both live here…” He looked around. “Yeah, I think right here at the Texas Longhorn Ranch is where our story is.”

“I’d love to get married here,” Maddy said. “I’ll talk to my momma and then Holly about what date we can do.”

“Perfect.” He gazed at her again. “I really do want to spend my whole life with you, Mads. You’re my favorite person in the whole world.”

She said, “I love you too, Kyle,” just before kissing her again.
