“Sorry,” she says. She looks up at her husband with an apologetic look, and Hector only laughs. “It’s the hormones,” she whines, sending us all into laughter.

“I get it,” I say, remembering when I was pregnant with Addy and desperately wanted to hump everyone in sight but couldn’t. Luckily for Carolina, Hector is one of those uber-confident men who isn’t threatened by a little wandering eye. He knows what they have, and they are pretty perfect together.

For his part, Bren has gotten used to the fact that Carolina will never be able to stop fangirling around him. He’s wisely chosen to find it endearing since she’s one of my best friends.

When they finally leave, I almost want to cry as I scan the mess. I get a sickening flashback to the first time I saw this house in Karl’s hands. Bren pulls me into his arms and rubs my back. “It’ll be taken care of,” he says.

“I know. I don’t think I’ll be able to look the housekeeper in the eye, though,” I say. Inwardly, I one thousand percent blame Isael and Lulu. They’re a menace to society with that level of energy—and the horror of boys strikes down my spine for the first time.

“How about we give her a ridiculously large bonus?” Bren asks, still talking about the housekeeper.

I nod. “It’s the least we can do.”

I sinkinto the warmth of the tub, ready to relax after the long day, and don’t expect Bren to come in when he does. He pulls up a chair behind the tub and massages my shoulders. I could kiss his feet. I groan. “That feels good,” I say.

“Good.”

He lets me enjoy the massage for a long while before speaking again and bringing me back to earth. “Addy looked happy.” And though I can’t see his face from behind me, I can hear the smile in his voice.

“She’s a very happy kid, though you know, Lola screwed us over getting her that guitar.”

Bren lets out a breath that lands on the back of my neck, and my nipples pebble in one second flat. Stupid hormones. That’s all it takes—one hot breath from him on my skin.

I totally get what Carolina meant.

“I’ll soundproof a room for Addy to practice in,” he says, and it warms my heart that he is willing to encourage Addy even when she’s following in Lola’s footsteps instead of his. I couldn’t have asked for a better father for my daughter.

It’s time. I have to tell him.

I clear my throat. “Bren? Can you come here where I can see you? I want to tell you something.”

He steps over to the side of the tub and kneels next to me. “Everything okay? You sound off.”

I nod. “Bren, I—” I chew my lower lip and take a deep breath. “Um, how would you feel about another baby?”

His eyes widen as they roam my face, then drop to my belly. “Sofia?” he asks tentatively, his giant hand submerging underwater, where he presses it gently to my lower belly.

I nod at him even as his eyes start to glisten. “I’m pregnant.”
