The rogue’s voice sounded through the speaker. “So, what did you decide?”

“Lucas?”

The rogue didn’t answer.

“Yes, I know your name and who you are.” My voice sank into a deep, guttural growl. “Do you know who I am? I’m the wolf you failed to kill up on Beartooth Mountain. I’m the one who caught your brother off-guard. I tore him to shreds and relished every second. I don’t need to tell you how it felt to sink my teeth and claws into his skin. I’m sure you’ve experienced the pleasure many times as you tortured members of your own pack.”

“You...bitch. You will never find him. You will—”

“Lucas,” I interrupted. “You’re wrong. I found your brother in the Garden of the Gods.” The connection stayed silent for so long I thought the rogue had disconnected the call. “Strange that you didn’t kill him yourself, especially when you seem to enjoy murdering members of your own family so much—grandmothers, mothers, sisters, brothers. It would’ve been a mercy to put him out of his misery. Still, I understand the concept of mercy is foreign to you.”

“I’m going to kill everyone you ever loved. I’m going—”

“Desarae!” Decker’s strangled voice came over the phone. “I’m—” His shouted words cut off with a deep guttural grunt.

I threw my head back as a red-hot stab went straight through my chest. Whatever Alpha power Gunner had used to help me block out my brother’s pain disappeared and left me wide open. My heart stuttered. Ice filled my hands. Suddenly numb fingers lost their grip on the little phone, and it fell to the hard-packed dirt. My legs trembled, and my knees buckled as my sight went dark.

“Des!” Seff caught me in his arms before I hit the ground.

Gasping through the agonizing pain, I searched inside for the tie that bound my brother and me together since we were in the womb. I felt it slip away. The pain disappeared as quickly as it had come on.

No. No. No.

Decker was gone.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

The strange roar inmy ears drowned out the urgent voices around me.

Decker is gone.

“My brother is dead.” My voice didn’t sound like my own.

Gunner leaned in close to me. “Are you sure?”

I nodded. “I can’t feel him anymore.” The agony he’d been going through had stopped.

Gunner cupped my cheek. “I’m so damned sorry.” He stepped away and spoke to his brother. “Ralph, you know what to do.”

Ralph nodded, then looked around at the group of wolves standing nearby. “Go home. As much as I’d love all y’all to witness this, you can’t be anywhere near here when this rogue goes to hell.”

Everyone except for Simone and Brenin, ran off into the darkness without hesitating.

Simone took my hand. “I’m so sorry.”
