Brenin let off a deep grunt behind me. Simone’s shocked gasp followed.

Above the propane and the smell of burning wood and plastic, the heavy scent of blood filled my nose. I turned to see the long piece of metal I’d just dodged now sticking out of Brenin’s right shoulder.

“Well, fuck.” Brenin’s face lost all its color as he grabbed at the foreign object and tried to pull it loose. He fell to his knees and grunted again as the metal bar jerked up and down.

Simone went to her knees beside him. She reached out her hands, then pulled them away like she wasn't sure she should try to help.

“I’m fine,” Brenin said and waved her off. “Not a big deal. I’ll take care of it.”

Brenin was a Breeder. Once the object was pulled free, he would heal.

I could help with that.

I set my Breeder free. My limbs lengthened, muscles stretched and added bulk, taking me to my full upright height. The world became brighter and louder as my Breeder eyes and ears adjusted to my surroundings. Seff’s luscious scent mixed with scents around me—smoke and burning plastic, dirt and hay, sweat and fear, lemon candy and leather and green moss, and the smell of meat searing in a blazing fire.

Decker.

I shivered involuntarily at the thought.

He doesn’t feel it. He was already gone.

Closing my eyes and bowing my head, I took a deep breath and started counting. I needed to focus on what I could do and not what I had no control over. The familiar routine calmed my frantic thoughts within seconds.

Once I felt in control, I gazed down at Seff. His mouth hung open. He stared, wide-eyed, in awe—at me. Only four others had ever seen me in my Breeder form—my parents, my Alpha, and the rogue I’d torn apart. None of them had looked at me the way mysakanalooked at me.

I cocked my head, raised an eyebrow, and gave mysakanaa wink. His wolfy grin was all I needed.

“Where’s Gunner?” Simone stood quickly and stared out at the burning building. The edge of panic in her voice pierced my heart.

Dear gods, please let Gunner be alive.

Seff glanced at me. The message“I’ll find him”slipped through our bond. Then, he ran.

Simone didn’t stand around and wait. She stripped out of her clothing, shifted into a sleek black wolf, and raced after Seff within seconds.

“So, Desarae, can you give me a hand with this?” Brenin pointed at his shoulder.

I nodded, knelt in front of him, and wrapped my clawed hand around the long metal rod protruding from his shoulder. I yanked, hard. Brenin's handsome face screwed up in pain, but he didn't make a sound.

I grabbed Simone’s discarded blouse and hoped she didn’t mind the blood I was about to get all over it. I wrapped it tightly around Brenin’s wound, then used the bra she’d also tossed aside as a sling to keep Brenin’s arm in place.

A smell I'd caught once before, after my pack had been murdered, hit me in the face. I shot up from my knees and stared out into the night. A black shadow limped from the front of the market out into the street.

“How the fuck did that bastard survive?” Brenin grunted as he tried to stand and fell back on his ass.

I didn't care how he survived the blast and fire. The last murdering rogue bastard would never survive me.
