He tried to poison me.

Seff’s low, deep snarl sounded on my right. I spun around, throwing out my arm to stop Seff’s forward lunge as he went in for the kill. I knocked him back several feet, growling a warning I wasn’t sure he understood.

He shifted and stared at me. “Des, we have to end this. He’s...suffering.”

I shifted, too. My first words should’ve been a warning, but gods, there was no time. I leaned over and vomited. After a shaky breath, I pointed at the still convulsing wolf. “Poison. I can taste it in my mouth.”

Seff’s dark eyes widened as what I said sank in. “Did you swallow it?”

“Yes, I think so.” I wiped a hand across my mouth and chin. My palm came away wet and sticky. I glared at the rogue and snarled, “You fucking coward.”

Seff ran and bent over the rogue, touched the bloody wound, and brought his fingers to his nose. He flinched back and wiped his fingers in the dirt.

“You need to vomit again.” He shot a glance at the native wolves, who still milled around. “Get help.”

Several wolves turned and sprinted down the dirt road while one wolf stayed behind, calling out to every wolf within hearing distance.

“Seff, I love you but...”

“I know you’re not saying goodbye to me.” Seff closed the few feet in between us. The warmth of his body radiated against mine. One arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me in as his other hand stroked my long bangs behind my ear. “And in case it slipped your mind, we have two little females to raise, so don’t think for a second you’re not going to be here to help me do that.” He leaned in a placed a kiss on my temple. His lips moved to my ear, and he whispered, “I love you, Desarae Draydon. From the second I caught your scent and the first moment I laid eyes on you.”

“Now it sounds like you’re saying goodbye.” I lifted an eyebrow. “Seff, I’m a Breeder. I’ll burn out the poison.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

Seff had rushed meto Brenin’s SUV, hurriedly dressed me in his T-shirt, and held me as I expelled the last traces of poison-laced blood. It would do no good to object to Seff’s careful attentions. He was in panic mode. He’d buckled me into the front seat and raced down the dirt road to Gunner’s huge house. The native wolves milled around nervously. Several males I recognized from Jessy and Dain’s wedding rushed to open doors and stepped aside as Seff carried me through the house to a bedroom with an adjoining bathroom.

The look of concern hadn’t left Uncle Kern’s eyes since he’d arrived.

“Kern, I’ve already thrown up three times, so please don’t ask me to do it again.” I couldn’t get the taste of blood or poison out of my mouth, no matter how many times I rinsed but I was okay. “I’m also a Breeder. I’ll be fine.”

Kern gave me a tight smile. “I think the best course of treatment is for you to take on your Breeder form and let your metabolism burn the poison out of you.” Kern scrubbed a hand across his jaw. “Still, if I knew what it was, I’d find the antidote, but—”

“Compound 1080,” Seff said. He hadn’t left my side since we’d come into the house.

Kern’s gaze shot to Seff. “Are you sure?”

“I’ve smelled it before.”

“There’s no antidote for Compound 1080.” His eyebrows pinched together. “I thought it was odorless.”

“Not to me.” Seff sighed. “Besides, I saw a supply of it down in that torture chamber at Rule’s mansion.”

Kern paced a few steps, shaking his head. “Rule Arwan had his sons, those rogues, attack their victims in groups. I bet this rogue thought we’d do the same to him, and he was hoping to take out as many of our pack as he could. They didn’t know a damn thing about Breeders.”
